Renewed Clashes Erupt Between Pakistan and Afghanistan Forces
Fresh clashes have erupted along the border between Pakistan and the Taliban-led government of Afghanistan, with both sides exchanging accusations of initiating hostilities. The skirmishes began late on Friday night, leading to civilian casualties and prompting residents to flee the Afghan city of Spin Boldak.
According to reports from local authorities, four bodies were taken to a hospital in Kandahar, while several others sustained injuries during the fighting. Witnesses indicated that the firefight commenced around 22:30 local time (18:00 GMT) and lasted for approximately four hours. Both nations have confirmed that they traded fire, but each has blamed the other for the outbreak of violence.
Mosharraf Zaidi, spokesperson for Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, alleged that the Taliban engaged in "unprovoked firing," stating, "An immediate, befitting & intense response has been given by our armed forces. Pakistan remains fully alert and committed to ensuring its territorial integrity and the safety of our citizens." In contrast, Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid asserted that the attacks were initiated by Pakistani forces, compelling Afghan troops to retaliate.
Local sources from Afghanistan reported that Pakistani artillery targeted residential areas, leading to property damage and civilian injuries. Ali Mohammed Haqmal, head of Kandahar's information department, confirmed that both light and heavy artillery were employed in the bombardment.
These latest confrontations occur less than two months after a ceasefire agreement was brokered by Qatari and Turkish officials, following a period of intense violence that left dozens dead. The agreement was intended to mitigate tensions that have escalated since the Taliban regained power in Afghanistan in 2021.
Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have been strained, with Islamabad accusing the Taliban of harbouring militant groups responsible for attacks within Pakistan. Conversely, the Taliban government has denied these claims, accusing Pakistan of externalising its security issues.
In the past year, the Pakistan Taliban has conducted numerous attacks against Pakistani security forces, with estimates suggesting over 600 incidents have occurred. This has exacerbated tensions, leading to a deteriorating security situation along the border.
Last week, representatives from both countries met in Saudi Arabia to negotiate a broader peace agreement, but the talks failed to yield significant results. Despite the continuation of the fragile ceasefire, hostilities persist, with Afghanistan accusing Pakistan of conducting airstrikes in Afghan provinces, including a recent incident in Khost that reportedly resulted in civilian casualties.
The ongoing conflict highlights the complex relationship between the two nations, with both facing domestic and regional pressures as they navigate their contentious history. As the situation develops, the international community continues to monitor the region closely, hoping for a sustainable resolution to the ongoing tensions.
