Asim Munir Becomes Pakistan's First Chief of Defence Forces
Field Marshal Asim Munir has been officially appointed as Pakistan's first Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) for a five-year term while simultaneously continuing his duties as the Chief of Army Staff (COAS). This appointment was confirmed after President Asif Ali Zardari approved the recommendation made by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The establishment of the CDF role follows the passage of the 27th Constitutional Amendment by the Pakistani parliament, aimed at improving coordination among the army, navy, and air force, thereby enhancing decision-making in critical situations. The new position effectively replaces the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), which has been abolished.
The formal announcement has alleviated concerns regarding delays in the CDF appointment, which was anticipated since the retirement of the previous CJCSC, General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, on 27 November. According to a statement released by the Prime Minister's office, the recent changes in the constitution allow the dual authority of CDF and COAS to reside in a single individual.
Field Marshal Munir, who has gained prominence in Pakistani military circles, was previously appointed as COAS in November 2022. His tenure was extended for an additional five years in 2024. The recent legislative changes also stipulate that Munir will retain his military uniform for life and will be granted immunity from arrest, a provision that has sparked criticism from political factions opposing the current government.
Critics argue that the powers conferred upon Munir potentially undermine democratic principles in Pakistan, a country where the military has historically held significant sway over governance. The military's influence has persisted even as Pakistan has contended with various militant threats since becoming a key ally of the United States in the war on terror in 2001.
Moreover, in a related development, President Zardari has approved a two-year extension for Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu, the current Chief of Air Staff, effective upon the conclusion of his existing five-year term in March 2026. This move reflects ongoing efforts within the military leadership to ensure stability during a tumultuous period in Pakistan's political landscape.
Asim Munir's elevation to the role of CDF represents a significant milestone in Pakistan's military structure, and his tenure will be closely watched both domestically and internationally as it unfolds against the backdrop of regional security dynamics and internal political challenges.
