Ranbir Kapoor Reflects on Accepting Role of Lord Rama in Ramayana
Ranbir Kapoor shares how fatherhood influenced his decision to take on the role of Lord Rama in Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming film Ramayana.

The anticipation surrounding Ranbir Kapoor's portrayal of Lord Rama in the upcoming film 'Ramayana,' directed by Nitesh Tiwari, has reached a significant level. However, Kapoor revealed that he initially declined the role due to apprehensions about his suitability for such a prestigious character.

During a recent event in New York alongside director Nitesh Tiwari and producer Namit Malhotra, Ranbir Kapoor discussed his initial reaction to the role. Reflecting on the offer he received approximately four years ago, he stated, 'My instant reaction was ‘No’, I’m not fit enough, not good enough, and I won’t be able to do full justice.' This hesitation was coupled with the news of becoming a father for the first time.

The actor elaborated, saying, 'That fear quickly turned into gratitude because opportunities like this were needed very much in my life. I was in a period in my life where I needed to change my life and lifestyle.' His daughter, Raha, who was born in November 2022, provided a significant turning point for Ranbir. He suggested that this coincidence influenced his decision to embrace the role, adding that portraying Lord Rama coincided perfectly with his new life stage as a father.

Having married Alia Bhatt in April 2022, the couple welcomed Raha later that year. Ranbir and Alia made headlines when they presented their daughter publicly during Christmas celebrations in 2023.

To prepare for the role, Kapoor spoke about his deep connection with the story of Ramayana, recounting how viewing Ramanand Sagar's adaptation has profoundly shaped his understanding of the character. 'There is a lot of preparation, not just physical. It's emotional and spiritual. It’s about understanding it and being very truthful,' he remarked. His approach reflects his respect for the narrative of Ramayana and the journey of Lord Rama.

Nitesh Tiwari's 'Ramayana' is among the highly anticipated films of the next few years. The film's first three-minute teaser was revealed on July 3, 2025, showcasing striking visuals, including scenes of Ranbir climbing a tree while wielding a bow and arrow. The cast includes notable names such as Yash as Ravana, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Ravi Dubey as Lakshman, and Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman. The acclaimed composer Hans Zimmer is collaborating with AR Rahman on the film's musical score.

Set to release globally in October 2026 ahead of the Diwali festival, the first part of 'Ramayana' will be followed by a second installment in 2027. The producers have teased that a new glimpse of the film will be revealed coinciding with the festival of Hanuman Jayanti on April 2, providing a first look at the key characters, including Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi, and others.
