Putin Warns Against Pressure on India-Russia Relations
Russian President Vladimir Putin asserts that pressures on India to limit ties with Russia could destabilise global relations.

Russian President Vladimir Putin asserted during a recent press conference that exerting pressure on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reduce ties with Russia could adversely affect global stability. He stated, "Everyone has understood that putting pressure on Prime Minister Narendra Modi... is detrimental for international relations and for bilateral relations. It doesn’t matter where this pressure comes from." Putin highlighted India's significance as a strategic partner and credited its growth to the efforts of Mr. Modi's administration.

The comments were made in the context of concerns from Western nations regarding India’s relationship with Russia, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The United States has urged India to curtail its imports of Russian crude oil and has imposed tariffs in response. However, Putin affirmed India's right to prioritise its national interests, insisting that India's burgeoning ties with the U.S. do not inherently compromise its relationship with Russia.

When discussing India’s global stature, Putin noted, "We are glad that India is developing its relations with all the countries; it is only natural that it develops its economy in accordance with its interests."

At the conference, Putin also addressed the dynamics between India and China, suggesting that Russia maintains a neutral stance in their bilateral relations. He referred to his friendship with Chinese President Xi Jinping and remarked, "Interfering into them is not a good idea," emphasising the complex and delicate nature of India-China interactions.

Additionally, Putin discussed the longstanding issue of Indo-Pakistani relations, expressing awareness of the complexities involved. He indicated that he does not perceive Pakistan as being under Chinese control.

In a strategic move, Putin offered Russia's fifth-generation stealth aircraft, the Su-57, to India for potential joint development. He noted, "This could have been our product... We are ready to work with India," reiterating that there would be no limitations in terms of collaboration.

These statements come amid changing geopolitical landscapes and reflect Russia's commitment to strengthening its ties with India amidst external pressures.
