Prime Minister Modi Promotes National Handloom Day Celebrations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has encouraged citizens to enthusiastically commemorate National Handloom Day on 7 August. In a video message, he reminded the public that this date marks the launch of the Swadeshi Movement in 1905, a pivotal moment in India’s fight for independence against British rule. Modi called on all citizens to support impoverished weaving families and the artisans who craft textiles by hand. He emphasised the necessity of bolstering these small, economically disadvantaged families in order to foster a self-reliant nation. Furthermore, the Prime Minister urged everyone to purchase at least one handloom product and to create and share a video of their experience on social media. This initiative aims to honour and promote the skills and craftsmanship of Indian artisans on a global scale. National Handloom Day is observed annually on 7 August to recognise the significance of the Swadeshi Movement, which aimed to empower the local economy through higher demand for indigenous products. On this day, PM Modi expressed admiration for the skill, creativity, and commitment of India's weavers and artisans, who have played a crucial role in preserving and enhancing the country's rich textile traditions over generations. In a recent social media post, Modi confirmed that the Government would continue to support the handloom sector, recognising it as a vital component of rural empowerment and women's development, while also working towards the goal of a self-reliant India, or Atmanirbhar Bharat. He encouraged citizens to share their favourite handloom products and to make videos using the hashtag NationalHandloomDay, stating that this would motivate craftsmen associated with the industry.
