President Droupadi Murmu Celebrates Haryana’s Heritage and Progress
President Droupadi Murmu praised the contributions of women from Haryana during the state’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in Kurukshetra on November 1. She emphasised how Haryana’s daughters have excelled across various fields, particularly in sports, highlighting a growing recognition of their achievements on both national and global stages.
During her address, President Murmu noted the historical significance of figures such as Sucheta Kripalani and Shanno Devi. Sucheta Kripalani, who served as India’s first female chief minister, was acknowledged for her pioneering role in Indian politics. Shanno Devi, the first Speaker of the Haryana Legislative Assembly, was also celebrated for her contributions to the advancement of democratic institutions in the state.
The President recalled the legacy of Kalpana Chawla, an Ambala-born astronaut who inspired countless young girls by her remarkable achievements in space exploration. She also spoke of local freedom fighter Kanshi Ram, who was executed by the British in 1915, recognising his role in the struggle for independence.
Highlighting women’s empowerment initiatives, President Murmu mentioned the national campaign ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’, initiated in 2015, which has led to significant improvements in the sex ratio at birth. The ratio, which was 871 girls per 1,000 boys in 2014, has reportedly risen to 915 by 2025, an encouraging sign of cultural change towards daughters.
“Efforts by both state and central governments should continue to focus on improving women’s health and girls' education,” she stated, underlining the need for coordinated action to further enhance their status in society.
The ceremony also acknowledged the accomplishments of Haryana's female athletes. For instance, President Murmu lauded sportswomen like Manu Bhaker and Jasmine Lamboria for their contributions to India’s sporting achievements. Notably, Manisha Bhanwala made history as the first Indian woman wrestler to claim gold at the World Wrestling Championships in Kazakhstan.
In her address, the President praised Haryana for its rich history and contributions, stating that the state had provided foundational knowledge through texts like the Bhagavad Gita. She also expressed hope for the state’s continued progress, citing the launch of a hydrogen-powered train as a step towards sustainable development.
Lastly, President Murmu offered prayers at the Shaktipeeth Shri Devikup Maa Bhadrakali Temple, highlighting the cultural significance of the location. She called for a collective effort to celebrate and strengthen Haryana’s heritage and its contributions to the nation’s history and future.
