Prashant Kishor, notable Indian election strategist, secures a by-election victory in Bihar, marking his entry as a lawmaker.

Prashant Kishor, a prominent figure in Indian electoral politics, achieved a significant milestone by winning a by-election in Bihar, marking his first successful bid as a lawmaker. This victory comes after his previous defeat in the 2025 assembly elections, where Kishor's party, Jan Suraaj, failed to secure any seats.

The by-election victory in Bankipur is notable as it represents a defeat for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which had held this constituency since 1995. The previous incumbent, Nitin Nabin, had secured the seat multiple times, having inherited it from his father. Following his election to the upper house of parliament, Nabin resigned, leading to this by-election.

Kishor's journey in politics has been eventful. Initially revered as a master strategist, he played a crucial role in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's successful campaign in the 2014 general elections. He implemented innovative campaigning techniques, such as using holograms to reach small gatherings, but later experienced a fallout with the BJP.

Further in his political career, Kishor assisted in creating the coalition that led to the BJP's defeat in Bihar’s 2015 assembly elections. However, he left the Janata Dal (United) in 2020 due to its stance on the Citizenship Amendment Act, a contentious law introduced by the BJP government.

After being credited with West Bengal's victory in 2021, Kishor publicly indicated his desire to cease consultancy work and instead enter politics. In 2022, he launched a foot march across Bihar, culminating in the establishment of his own party, Jan Suraaj, in early 2024.

Despite the previous discouragement from his election losses, Kishor's campaign in Bankipur focused on addressing local issues, particularly the critical topic of youth unemployment. With a significant proportion of voters in the constituency under 30, Kishor targeted Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary, questioning his capabilities in resolving Bihar's longstanding issues.

This strategy proved effective, with Kishor often drawing attention to the high levels of youth emigration from the state, which has consistently faced challenges such as unemployment and a lack of job opportunities. The Bankipur by-election results are being interpreted as a potential shift in voter sentiment, especially among young individuals dissatisfied with the status quo.

While political analysts caution against drawing sweeping conclusions from a single electoral result, Kishor's unexpected triumph may indicate the beginnings of a more formidable presence for the Jan Suraaj party in Bihar’s political landscape. Kishor now finds himself at a crossroads, as he seeks to build on this momentum and transform his electoral success into a broader political influence within the state.
