Political Violence Erupts in West Bengal After Election Results

Violence has erupted in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal, resulting in the deaths of at least four individuals following the victory of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state assembly elections. This recent electoral win marks the BJP's first success in West Bengal, a state with a population of approximately 100 million people, where the party secured 206 out of 294 seats. Previously, the state was governed by Mamata Banerjee, the leader of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), who had served as chief minister since 2011. Banerjee lost her own seat in the recent elections and has denounced the results, alleging electoral fraud by the central government.

Following the announcement of results, clashes broke out between supporters of the rival parties in various districts, including the state capital, Kolkata. The BJP reported that two of its party workers were killed, while the TMC also claimed the deaths of two of their members. Samik Bhattacharya, a BJP state leader, addressed the press, stating, "Two of our workers were killed after the election results were announced on Monday," asserting that the party advocates for peace. On the other hand, a TMC representative condemned the violent incidents, labelling the killings as "brutal murder" and emphasising that their offices had come under attack in several locations around the state.

The police confirmed the fatalities and noted that an officer had been injured during the disturbances. Areas such as Topsia and Tiljala faced a breakdown of law and order, leading police to report acts of vandalism against public property. Banerjee, holding onto her position as chief minister, described the BJP's electoral win as an "immoral victory," asserting that over 100 seats were unfairly won by the BJP. Technically, under the Indian constitution, the state governor may request Banerjee's resignation or await the end of her term before the inauguration of newly elected representatives.

In the wake of these violent events, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has instructed West Bengal authorities to maintain a "zero tolerance" policy towards any post-election violence. According to All India Radio, officials have been directed to take all necessary precautions to prevent any further discord associated with the election results. Analysts have noted that the BJP's win in West Bengal represents a significant milestone, expanding the party's influence beyond its traditional strongholds in northern and central India.

On a related note, additional tensions arose in Kolkata when bulldozers were used to demolish structures in the historic New Market area, which traders from various backgrounds have operated for generations. Allegations surfaced of the actions being executed by BJP supporters as part of post-election celebration. TMC leaders condemned these actions as part of targeted attacks against them, further intensifying the unrest in the region.

The police have reported increasing complaints of violence and intimidation, leading to the establishment of a joint control centre involving central forces and state police to address the situation. Tensions in West Bengal continue to rise as both parties trade accusations amidst this significant political transition in the state.
