PM Modi's Turbans: A Tribute to Indian Textiles on Independence Day

Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated India's 80th Independence Day wearing a striking red bandhani-print turban. This traditional Rajasthani-style headwear was characterised by its long trailing end and paired with a white kurta-pajama, a chocolate-brown Nehru jacket, and a tricolour pocket handkerchief. The tie-and-dye design highlighted India's rich textile heritage, a recurring theme in Modi's Independence Day attire.

For the previous year's festivities, marking India's 79th Independence Day, Modi donned a vibrant all-saffron safa, positioning this bold colour at the forefront of his traditional ensemble. He completed the look with a white kurta and churidar, a saffron bandhgala jacket, and a tricolour stole. Modi’s address from the Red Fort this year marked his 12th consecutive appearance.

In 2024, the Prime Minister chose the colourful leheriya textile tradition from Rajasthan for his Independence Day turban. The headgear featured a lively combination of orange, dark green, and yellow streaks in a wave-like pattern, with an elongated pleated tail that extended behind him. The leheriya technique is renowned for its flowing designs reminiscent of desert winds.

2023 saw PM Modi reviving the bandhani tradition of Rajasthan with a vibrant multicoloured turban exhibiting bright yellow, green, and red hues. He paired this headgear with an off-white kurta-churidar, a black V-neck jacket, and a geometric-patterned pocket square.

In 2022, the Prime Minister's turban embodied the national flag’s colours, predominantly white with saffron and green stripes, reflecting a distinctly patriotic theme. His outfit consisted of a white kurta-churidar and a baby-blue Nehru jacket, perfectly aligning with the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign celebrations.

The year 2021 showcased Modi in a bold saffron turban embellished with red patterns and a long pink trailing end, a common design element in his previous turbans. This was teamed with a white kurta, fitted churidar, and deep blue jacket, complemented by a white scarf edged in saffron.

During the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, Modi's attire merged traditional style with necessary health measures. He wore a saffron-and-cream turban complete with an extended tail, alongside a white kurta and churidar. His orange-and-white stole also served dual purposes, functioning as a protective face covering in line with health protocols.

In 2019, the Prime Minister opted for a leheriya-patterned safa which highlighted one of Rajasthan's prominent textile traditions through its distinctive wave-like design.

Modi returned to a striking saffron turban for his appearance in 2018, this time adorned with red patterns and featuring an extended tail that reached his ankles, paired with a white stole bordered with bold geometric designs.

In 2017, he wore a bright yellow turban encompassing intricate traditional designs alongside vibrant red and yellow tones, highlighted by a subtle golden criss-cross pattern.

The year 2016 was marked by a pink-and-yellow bandhej turban, reflecting Rajasthan’s traditional dyeing technique characterised by tied portions of fabric before dyeing.

In 2015, Modi donned a vivid yellow Rajasthani turban with a multicoloured criss-cross pattern that enhanced his prominent silhouette as he addressed the nation.

The tradition of unique turbans began in 2014, during Modi's first address from the Red Fort. He wore a vivid red Jodhpuri bandhej turban with green accents and bright orange and yellow hues, establishing the colourful turban as a signature of his Independence Day appearances.
