PM Modi Affirms Poverty Reduction Efforts After World Bank Report
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlights significant progress in poverty reduction, citing recent World Bank data showing a sharp drop in extreme poverty.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has addressed recent World Bank findings regarding the decline of extreme poverty in India during a speech. According to the World Bank's latest report, India's extreme poverty rate has fallen to 2.6% in 2023, a notable decrease from previous years.

Modi emphasised that this achievement reflects more than just a slogan, asserting that genuine efforts have been made to alleviate poverty in the country. He acknowledged the need for sustainable employment to ensure that the gains made are maintained over time.

The World Bank's data play a significant role in framing discussions about economic progress in India. Modi pointed out that the sharp reduction in extreme poverty is a testament to various initiatives implemented by the Indian government aimed at improving the livelihoods of citizens.

Despite this progress, challenges remain. Reports suggest that youth unemployment and skill gaps may hinder the potential of the working-age population in contributing effectively to the economy. Modi indicated that targeted measures, such as promoting labour-intensive manufacturing and enhancing skill development, are essential for ensuring continued improvement in living standards.

Furthermore, the phenomenon known as 'BIMARU,' which describes a contiguous belt of states facing significant poverty, including Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, highlights regional disparities within the country. Addressing these disparities will be crucial in sustaining poverty reduction efforts moving forward.

Experts note that high GDP growth alone does not guarantee a decrease in poverty levels. Weak wage growth and an unequal distribution of productivity gains can limit the positive impact of economic expansion on household incomes. Hence, focused efforts on inclusive growth are essential.

As India continues to navigate these complex challenges, the government's commitment to eradicating poverty remains a focal point, with Modi vowing to pursue policies that promote equitable growth for all citizens.
