Pakistan Secures Dramatic Victory to Reach Asian Games Semi-Finals

Pakistan has advanced to the semi-finals of the women’s Asian Games following a nail-biting three-wicket victory over Thailand in a rain-affected quarter-final match held in Nisshin. The team faced a challenging target of 92 runs within 11 overs, narrowly completing the chase with just two balls remaining.

The match encountered a significant delay of nearly two hours due to wet conditions. After winning the toss, Pakistan decided to bowl first. The reduced powerplay was limited to 3.2 overs, during which Pakistan's captain, Fatima Sana, made an early breakthrough by dismissing Thai opener Natthakan Chantham.

Nannapat Koncharoenkai then took centre stage for Thailand, finding gaps in the field and forming a solid partnership with captain Naruemol Chaiwai. Koncharoenkai quickly accelerated the innings, smashing two consecutive fours in a 14-run over against Umm-e-Hani. She was within striking distance of a half-century in the final over but was dismissed for 49 runs off 38 balls, falling to a full delivery from Sana.

Fatima Sana ended her bowling spell with figures of two wickets for 22 runs, while her teammate, Nashra Sandhu, also contributed by claiming the wicket of Chaiwai. This performance helped restrict Thailand to a total of 91 runs for four wickets in their allotted overs.

In response, Pakistan's beginning was promising, with Shawaal Zulfiqar racing to 25 runs off 14 balls, including three fours and a six. However, Thailand made a remarkable comeback, leading to a quick succession of four wicket losses for only 11 runs in 14 balls. Zulfiqar was the first to fall, followed by Ayesha Zafar, Gull Feroza, and Aliya Riaz, leaving Pakistan struggling at 47 for 4 when they initially had 36 runs without loss.

Faced with 45 runs needed from 30 balls, Fatima Sana showcased her skills, hitting several boundaries. A pivotal 25-run over put Pakistan back in contention, leaving them requiring 19 runs from 18 balls.

Sana contributed 21 runs from 13 balls before being dismissed, and Eyman Fatima was caught soon after, leaving 15 runs still needed. Tuba Hassan made a significant impact by hitting back-to-back sixes and a four, which narrowed the target to just four runs from the final seven balls. Hassan was caught on the last ball of the penultimate over, but Eman Naseer and Umm-e-Hani held their nerve, successfully completing the chase with four singles.

This victory extends Pakistan's storied history in the Asian Games, where they have previously secured two gold medals. Pakistan will now await the outcome of the match between Malaysia and Sri Lanka, which will determine their semi-final opponent on September 20. Earlier in the tournament, rain forced the cancellation of Bangladesh’s quarter-final against China, allowing Bangladesh to proceed to the semi-finals, where they will meet the winner of the match between India and Japan, also on September 20.
