Pakistan Protests US Envoy Sergio Gor's Remarks on Kashmir
Pakistan has summoned the United States Charge d'Affaires, Natali A Baker, following remarks made by US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, during his visit to Jammu and Kashmir. Gor stated, "Kashmir is an important part of India," while meeting Omar Abdullah, the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, in Srinagar on Wednesday. This statement has provoked a strong response from Islamabad, which condemned the remarks as "irresponsible".
In an official statement, Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed that it lodged a "strong demarche" against Gor's comments, which they characterised as "factually incorrect". The ministry reiterated that Jammu and Kashmir is recognised as a disputed territory under international law, awaiting resolution in accordance with relevant United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
Gor's comments come amidst a backdrop of escalating political tensions between India and Pakistan regarding the Kashmir issue. The US Ambassador, who was on his first visit to the region, described Jammu and Kashmir as “incredibly beautiful” and expressed his excitement about being there. He also noted that the United States would reconsider its travel advisories for the area, which currently holds a Level 4 warning advising against travel.
During his meeting with Abdullah, Gor discussed potential areas for enhanced cooperation, specifically citing tourism and horticulture. Abdullah stated that the meeting focused on opportunities to expand engagement between Jammu and Kashmir and the United States, indicating a desire to build on diplomatic relations.
Despite this overture, Pakistan's government has been adamant that Gor's remarks contradict the long-established international position on the Kashmir dispute. Pakistan's statement further asserted that Gor's comments countered the US commitment to international law and United Nations resolutions.
Analysts indicate that the incident may further complicate the already delicate relationship between the US and Pakistan, particularly against the backdrop of US President Donald Trump's previous comments about mediating between India and Pakistan. The situation is further exacerbated by Islamabad's recent elections in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, regions claimed by India but administered by Pakistan.
India, on its part, has consistently maintained that Jammu and Kashmir, including areas referred to as Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, are integral parts of the country. Indian officials have previously accused Pakistan of using fight against terrorism as a guise for diplomatic tactics in the region.
In summary, Gor's visit and subsequent comments have reignited discussions surrounding Kashmir, an issue fraught with historical complexities and sensitivities between India and Pakistan. The United States’ stance appears to oscillate in this dynamic, balancing its relations with both countries amid ongoing disputes over the region's status.
