Pakistan Confirmed US-Iran Deal Progress Amid Ongoing Tensions
Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced that the final text of an agreement between the United States and Iran has been reached. He stated that Pakistan is collaborating closely with both Washington and Tehran to coordinate the next steps. Sharif's remarks come amid a backdrop of heightened tensions in the region, with implications for both security and diplomatic relations.
In a related development, a significant number of British lawmakers have voiced their opposition to an upcoming property exhibition in London. They claim it promotes the sale of land located in Israeli settlements built on occupied Palestinian territory. A letter addressed to Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, signed by 65 Labour MPs alongside peers from various parties, warns that the event, titled the “Great Israeli Real Estate Event,” could contribute to actions contradicting international law.
Labour MP Andy McDonald, who organised the letter, stated, “The government has an opportunity to uphold its obligations under international law and begin to take meaningful action against Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestine.” The Palestinian diplomatic mission in the UK has echoed these concerns, calling for the prohibition of events that endorse illegal settlement activities.
In parallel, the Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani recently engaged in discussions with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty regarding the mediation efforts between the US and Iran. Both officials expressed their satisfaction with the breakthrough achieved in negotiations while hoping for swift action from both Washington and Tehran to finalise the agreement.
Switzerland has also indicated its willingness to act as host for a potential signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the United States and Iran, contingent upon both parties agreeing to it. The Swiss Foreign Ministry stated, “Switzerland is fully engaged. We are in close contact with the United States and Iran,” emphasising its active role in facilitating efforts towards de-escalation in the ongoing conflict.
Esmaeil Baghaei, spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, confirmed that relevant institutions are finalising the details of the agreement but declined to comment on specific timing or location for the anticipated signing. He noted that discussions surrounding the agreement must remain confidential for the time being.
The communication from the White House has been limited, with no formal confirmation about the agreement's details. Recent tweets from the US President have hinted at uncertainties, suggesting that some elements may be misrepresented. However, officials from the Vice President’s office and Sharif have attributed these uncertainties to misinformation.
On the ground, developments in the region remain tense. Hezbollah has reported conducting drone strikes against Israeli military positions in southern Lebanon, marking a notable escalation in hostility. This highlights the precarious balance of power in a region already fraught with conflict.
As international attention focuses on the potential US-Iran agreement, further updates on the situation in the occupied West Bank indicate ongoing challenges in achieving lasting peace and stability. The viability of the agreement, while promising, remains to be thoroughly evaluated as diplomatic efforts continue to unfold.
