Iran and US Edge Closer to Peace Deal Amid Tensions
Amid escalating tensions in West Asia, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Friday, 12 June 2026, stated that the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to address the ongoing U.S.-Israeli war on Iran has 'never been closer'. He urged media organisations to refrain from speculation regarding the agreement's details until it is finalised, affirming that Iran intends to be transparent in sharing information with the public.
The statement comes as U.S. President Donald Trump condemned Iran for a recent drone attack on Indian vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, labelling the action as 'totally unacceptable'. This attack reportedly resulted in the deaths of three Indian seafarers earlier in the week near the Oman coast.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu voiced his support for the U.S. approach, confirming full agreement with President Trump to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. This statement followed Trump's claims of an imminent deal with Tehran, which would involve a framework for peace discussed during negotiations.
In parallel, Iranian media reported on a draft agreement indicating that Tehran would maintain control over the crucial Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime route for oil shipments and global trade. The potential agreement reportedly includes provisions for a 60-day negotiation window regarding a nuclear deal.
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif confirmed the progress in peace negotiations, stating that the U.S. and Iran have reached an agreed text for a peace deal. He stressed the importance of ignoring misinformation and pledged that Pakistan would work closely with both parties to move forward with the final steps.
The proposed deal stipulates that Iran will dismantle its nuclear programme and eliminate nuclear materials, contingent upon adherence to a performance-based framework. A senior U.S. administration official indicated that financial incentives for Iran would only be released once the country meets its commitments under the agreement.
Additionally, Esmaeil Baqaei, spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, condemned the U.S. military actions against vessels with Indian crews and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased sailors. Baqaei stated, 'We extend our sympathies to the families and friends of the slain Indian sailors and offer our sincere condolences to the Indian people and government.'
As negotiations advance, both the U.S. and Iran exhibit a cautious approach while navigating the complexities of their tumultuous relations. The outcome of impending discussions may significantly influence the geopolitical landscape of the region and shape future bilateral commitments.
