Pakistan Bat First Against England in T20 World Cup Super Eight
Pakistan has chosen to bat first against England in their Super Eight fixture during the T20 World Cup, as confirmed by captain Salman Agha after winning the toss in Pallekele. This match marks the return of fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi, who replaces Faheem Ashraf.
Afridi's selection is significant following his absence from the previous two matches, which included a disappointing loss to India and a no-result against New Zealand. His previous performances had seen him conceding 101 runs over nine overs. The decision to bring Afridi back is partly due to England's vulnerability against left-arm seam bowling, a strength Afridi possesses.
While Ashraf had an impactful innings in Pakistan's opening group-stage match against the Netherlands, finishing with 29 not out off 11 balls, his bowling contributions in the tournament have been limited to just two overs.
"It looks like a good pitch," Agha stated at the toss. "We want to post an above-par score and defend that total." This strategy underscores Pakistan's aim to establish a solid foundation in what is a critical match for their progression in the tournament.
England, on the other hand, is poised to secure a spot in the semi-finals if they win this match or their upcoming fixture against New Zealand. Harry Brook, England's captain, expressed a desire to clinch victory tonight to avoid added pressure in their next game.
"That would be lovely, wouldn't it? But you never know in T20 cricket, it’s such a fickle game," Brook remarked.
He also indicated a preference to bat first had he won the toss, hoping for a better pitch compared to the one used in their recent low-scoring win against Sri Lanka.
The England team remains unchanged for this match, marking their fifth consecutive outing with the same lineup. Despite some calls to promote Brook from the No. 5 position in the batting order, the squad retains its original structure.
This encounter revives memories of the 2022 T20 World Cup final, which saw England triumph over Pakistan by five wickets at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, with nine players from that final still active in the current teams. The line-ups for both teams are as follows:
England: 1 Phil Salt, 2 Jos Buttler (wicketkeeper), 3 Jacob Bethell, 4 Tom Banton, 5 Harry Brook (captain), 6 Sam Curran, 7 Will Jacks, 8 Jamie Overton, 9 Liam Dawson, 10 Jofra Archer, 11 Adil Rashid.
Pakistan: 1 Sahibzada Farhan, 2 Saim Ayub, 3 Salman Agha (captain), 4 Babar Azam, 5 Fakhar Zaman, 6 Shadab Khan, 7 Usman Khan (wicketkeeper), 8 Mohammad Nawaz, 9 Shaheen Shah Afridi, 10 Salman Mirza, 11 Usman Tariq.
