Opposition Parties Reject Mamata Banerjee's Call to Unite Against BJP
Mamata Banerjee's plea for opposition unity against BJP faces backlash from Congress and CPI(M) in West Bengal.

Mamata Banerjee, the former Chief Minister of West Bengal and leader of the Trinamool Congress, recently called for a coalition of opposition parties to challenge the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This appeal follows the end of her party's 15-year governance in the state. However, the response from major opposition parties has been one of outright rejection.

State Congress spokesperson Soumya Aich Roy expressed disbelief at Banerjee’s invitation, questioning the inclusion of what she termed the ‘ultra-Left’. Roy referenced the violence associated with leftist groups, particularly citing an incident in May 2013 when 18 Congress members were murdered by Maoists in Chhattisgarh.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, a senior Congress leader and critic of Banerjee, reiterated concerns about her credibility, asserting that she had previously attempted to dismantle the Congress party and its influence in West Bengal. He remarked, “All the violence in Bengal during Mamata Banerjee's rule will now have consequences.” Chowdhury further suggested that Banerjee should acknowledge Rahul Gandhi as the leader of the opposition coalition before any collaboration could be considered.

In a staunch rebuttal, Md Salim, secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in West Bengal, asserted their refusal to ally with any party perceived as criminal or corrupt. Salim emphasised a commitment to the marginalised sections of society, stating, “Absolutely not. We will not accept anyone identified as criminal, extortionist, corrupt and communal.”

Banerjee's call for unity was made during a small gathering in front of her residence on May 9, coinciding with the birth anniversary of celebrated poet Rabindranath Tagore. As she addressed attendees, she described the BJP as the primary adversary and urged all opposition factions, including both leftist groups and their more radical counterparts, to unite against this common foe.

Following the recent elections, the BJP secured a majority with 207 out of 294 seats in the West Bengal Assembly, marking the party's first government in the state. The Trinamool Congress managed to obtain only 80 seats. This electoral shift has further complicated the political landscape in West Bengal, with Banerjee accusing the BJP of allowing ‘hooliganism’ within its ranks and asserting that she had maintained order during her tenure starting in 2011.

The dynamics between Banerjee and the opposition parties continue to evolve, with both historical rivalries and recent electoral changes influencing future collaboration prospects.
