One Year On: Air India AI-171 Crash Investigation Update Released
On 12 June 2026, a year has passed since the devastating crash of Air India Flight AI-171, which occurred shortly after take-off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad. The Boeing 787-8 aircraft was en route to London when the incident took place, resulting in the loss of 260 lives, including 241 individuals on board and 19 on the ground.
In an interim statement issued on Friday, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) confirmed that the evidence collected during the investigation is undergoing detailed examination. The completion of the final report is contingent upon finishing the full scope of the investigation and engaging in necessary international reviews and consultations.
The AAIB emphasised that it is conducting a comprehensive analysis of the gathered evidence and examination results, as stated in their press release. The investigation is focused on various aspects, including technical specifications, operational factors, as well as maintenance records and human elements relevant to the crash.
India's Minister for Civil Aviation remarked on X, stating, "The government is dedicated to thoroughly and objectively determining the accident's causes."
According to the interim report, significant developments have been made in assessing the aircraft's systems, the flight recorder data, engine components, and pertinent operational records.
The AAIB noted its investigation has benefitted from the collaboration with accredited representatives and technical experts from involved organisations. Under the guidelines specified by the United Nations aviation safety watchdog, an interim statement is deemed necessary if the final report is not released within 12 months of the incident.
The preliminary findings had observed that the fuel control switches of the aircraft inadvertently shifted to the cut-off position. This action interrupted fuel supplies to the engines immediately before the crash. However, the report did not conclude whether this switch movement was a result of intentional action, an error, or a technical issue. A cockpit exchange between the pilots was included in the preliminary report, generating widespread speculation about pilot involvement.
Pilot unions have condemned the inclusion of this exchange, asserting that it has skewed perceptions regarding pilot accountability before official conclusions are reached. The Federation of Indian Pilots, alongside Pushkar Raj Sabharwal—the father of Sumeet Sabharwal, the flight’s commander—has petitioned the Supreme Court for an independent investigation into the crash, one that would be monitored judicially.
The AAIB continues to engage stakeholders while pursuing a conclusive direction on this tragic event, which remains a poignant memory for many.
As the investigation persists, further updates will be crucial for understanding the causes that led to this large-scale tragedy.
