Omicron RF.5 Variant Detected in All COVID-19 Cases in Andhra Pradesh

The Indian Union Health Minister, JP Nadda, announced in the Rajya Sabha that genomic sequencing has confirmed the presence of the Omicron RF.5 sub-lineage in all COVID-19 cases reported from Andhra Pradesh. This information was shared during the minister's address on the current pandemic situation in the state. Nadda clarified that the World Health Organization (WHO) has not classified the RF.5 variant as a Variant of Concern, Variant of Interest, or Variant under Monitoring.

The minister also highlighted the ongoing surveillance efforts by the Union Health Ministry, which are conducted through the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme - Integrated Health Information Platform (IDSP-IHIP). He indicated that Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) are deployed to investigate any rise in influenza-like illness and severe acute respiratory illness, including COVID-19.

From June 24 to July 16, a total of 12 COVID-19 cases and three deaths were reported in Andhra Pradesh. As per Nadda’s statement, the fatalities were linked to patients who had pre-existing co-morbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, and other chronic diseases.

Genomic sequencing performed by the National Institute of Virology in Pune revealed that the positive COVID-19 samples from Kadapa district predominantly exhibited the RF.5 variant. Nadda stated that health remains under the jurisdiction of states, and emphasised that the Union Ministry provides necessary technical and financial assistance to enhance public health preparedness and response capabilities regarding epidemic-prone communicable diseases, notably COVID-19.

In the context of the current influenza season, Nadda urged all states and Union Territories to expand surveillance for influenza-like illness and ensure readiness in terms of diagnostics and personal protective equipment. Additionally, he mentioned that hospital surge planning and continuous capacity building for clinical and laboratory personnel are essential practices being encouraged through regular review meetings. Until July 25, the total number of reported COVID-19 cases in Andhra Pradesh stood at 49.
