Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemns the war in Iran and urges Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene for peace during assembly session.

Omar Abdullah, the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, delivered a strong condemnation of the military actions in Iran during a session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly. Abdullah characterised the military intervention as both unjust and illegal, specifically denouncing the killing of Iranian leader Ali Khamenei, which he attributes to actions by the United States and Israel.

During the assembly session, which is part of the ongoing budget discussions, Abdullah called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to leverage his relationships with both the U.S. and Israel to help bring an end to hostilities in the region. He stated, “I condemn the unjust and illegal war imposed on Iran and the killing of Khamenei. It’s not about religion but humanity.” He emphasised that the violence affects not just Iran but also people in Jammu and Kashmir, many of whom are believed to be stranded in the country amid the turmoil.

The assembly witnessed interruptions and protests as members from Abdullah’s Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) and the Opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) displayed images of Khamenei in a show of solidarity. Additionally, Tanvir Sadiq, an NC legislator, wore a black band with Khamenei’s name on it, further highlighting the emotional response to the situation in Iran.

Concerns regarding local residents were also expressed by Abdullah, who noted the impact of rising fuel prices and the plight of those from Jammu and Kashmir caught in the conflict. He stated, “Our feelings were also hurt and people have felt the pain. We have the right to put them forth.”

The assembly session, which resumed after a five-week recess, saw factions from various parties taking divergent positions on the issue. Legislators from the NC, PDP, and the Indian National Congress actively protested, demanding a resolution that condemns what they described as U.S.-Israel aggression.

Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi, a PDP legislator and Shia cleric, echoed the need for such a resolution, declaring that the Punjab Legislative Assembly has also voiced similar concerns. He noted, “We want to convey the message that the bully-based world order of the U.S. and Israel is not acceptable.”

In contrast, support for the government's stance was voiced by BJP legislators, who argued that discussions regarding foreign wars are outside the assembly's jurisdiction. Sham Lal Sharma, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, stated, “It’s not the domain of the House [to discuss the Iran war]. It should not have been discussed.”

The assembly session reached a tense peak with exchanges between legislators, underscoring the contentious nature of the debate regarding international relations and domestic sentiments concerning the conflict in Iran. The Speaker of the House eventually had to adjourn the proceedings for thirty minutes in response to the escalating protests and disruptions.

As the assembly continues its discussions, the impact of the conflict remains a pressing issue for the residents of Jammu and Kashmir, reflecting a complex interplay of local and international politics that continues to shape the region's socio-political landscape.
