North Korea's Kim Jong-un Acknowledges Troops' Role in Ukraine Conflict

In a significant address delivered on Saturday, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un acknowledged the deployment of troops who were tasked with clearing landmines in Russia’s Kursk region. This admission, reported by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), highlights North Korea's involvement in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, a topic that has generally been shrouded in secrecy.

According to intelligence reports from South Korea and Western agencies, North Korea has dispatched thousands of its soldiers to support Russia amid its prolonged military engagement in Ukraine, which has now extended for nearly four years. Analysts believe that this military cooperation is part of a broader arrangement in which Russia provides North Korea with essential resources, such as financial aid, military technology, food, and energy supplies. This support is seen as a means for North Korea to circumvent stringent international sanctions targeting its nuclear and missile programmes.

During the ceremony welcoming back the 528th Regiment of Engineers, Kim praised the soldiers for their bravery and dedication in transforming what he described as a 'danger zone' into a secure area within a short span of time. He remarked, "You could work a miracle of turning a vast area of danger zone into a safe and secure one in a matter of less than three months, a task which was believed to be impossible to be carried out even in several years."

The deployment lasted 120 days, commencing in August, and tragically resulted in the deaths of nine soldiers, for whom Kim posthumously awarded state honours, bestowing the title of 'Hero of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea' on the deceased. Kim expressed his condolences to the families impacted by this loss, indicating that the sacrifices of these soldiers would not be forgotten.

Images released from the ceremony depicted a visibly emotional Kim embracing returning soldiers, some of whom were in wheelchairs, underscoring the human toll of the conflict. The North Korean leader also paid his respects to the families of the fallen, kneeling before their portraits and laying medals and flowers in tribute.

In his speech, Kim also referred to the emotional weight carried by families during the soldiers' absence, stating, "The pain of waiting for 120 days in which I never forgot the beloved sons even for a moment."

This acknowledgement of North Korean troops' involvement in the Ukraine war marks a notable shift in Pyongyang's strategy of secrecy regarding its military engagements overseas. Earlier this year, Kim was seen alongside world leaders, including Xi Jinping of China and Vladimir Putin of Russia, during a military parade in Beijing, reinforcing the growing ties between these nations.

Despite ongoing diplomatic isolation, Kim's recent remarks suggest that North Korea remains committed to supporting Russia in its military objectives, which he claims demonstrates the 'prestige' of the North Korean army. The total number of North Korean soldiers deployed in support of Russia is estimated to be around 14,000, with casualties ranging from 3,000 to 4,000.

The welcoming ceremony is part of a series of public events aimed at honouring North Korean soldiers involved in the conflict. Previous ceremonies have showcased Kim's emotional interactions with soldiers returning from service, further solidifying the narrative of national pride and sacrifice in the face of adversity.
