Nishesh Basavareddy Upends Taylor Fritz in French Open Upset
Nishesh Basavareddy achieves a remarkable upset over Taylor Fritz at the 2026 French Open, captivating the Paris crowd and securing his first top-10 victory.

Nishesh Basavareddy, an American player of Indian descent, drew enthusiastic cheers from the Paris crowd after scoring a significant upset in the first round of the 2026 French Open. Competing on Court Suzanne Lenglen, Basavareddy faced the seventh seed, Taylor Fritz, in what became a thrilling four-set match, ending with scores of 7-6(5), 7-6(5), 6-7(9), 6-1.

The match was a surprising turn of events for Fritz, who was anticipated to advance smoothly as a higher-ranked player. Instead, the 21-year-old wildcard player showcased a dynamic blend of tactic and skill, using well-timed drop shots and aggressive shot-making to unsettle Fritz. The triumph marks Basavareddy's first victory over a top-10 ranked opponent, and it is a notable achievement since no American man has secured such a win at Roland Garros since 2000.

Basavareddy, currently ranked 148th in the world, had previously made headlines during his Grand Slam debut earlier this year at the Australian Open. In a hard-fought opening match against Novak Djokovic, he lost but garnered admiration for his determined performance. Following his victory against Fritz, the atmosphere at Suzanne Lenglen transformed into a celebration, with fans chanting his name.

In his on-court interview, acknowledging the enthusiastic crowd, Basavareddy expressed his gratitude in French: "Merci beaucoup tous". He continued, "C'est incroyable de jouer ici devant vous. Merci pour tout votre soutien aujourd'hui," which translates to "Thank you very much everyone. It is incredible to play here in front of you. Thank you for all your support today."

Switching back to English, Basavareddy admitted this victory was the pinnacle of his career thus far, stating, "This is definitely the biggest win of my career. First French Open main draw, and all this support — it is simply incredible." He expressed hope for continued support as he looked to advance further in the tournament.

Fritz, who has struggled with a knee injury and had limited match play heading into the tournament, acknowledged the challenge posed by Basavareddy’s exceptional drop shots. He remarked, "He really cooked me with the drop shots today. I was very impressed with his feel."

As Basavareddy prepares for his upcoming match against either Alex Michelsen or Aleksandr Shevchenko, he expressed confidence in his ability to compete, highlighting both anticipation and the strong community of fans rallying behind him. His breakthrough performance at Roland Garros marks a significant moment in his budding career, transitioning from admiration of tennis icons to establishing his own presence in the sport.
