New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani Reaches Out to Incarcerated Activist Umar Khalid
In a show of solidarity, newly inaugurated New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has sent a personal note to Umar Khalid, a student activist currently imprisoned for nearly five years in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots. Khalid has consistently denied the charges against him, which include accusations of conspiring to incite violence during the riots.
The undated handwritten message was made public on January 1, shortly after Mamdani's historic midnight swearing-in ceremony. The note, which was shared on social media platform X by Khalid’s partner, Banojyotsna Lahiri, included the heartfelt message: “Dear Umar, I think of your words on bitterness often, and the importance of not letting it consume oneself. It was a pleasure to meet your parents. We are all thinking of you.”
Umar Khalid, a former student at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, was arrested in September 2020 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, a law that allows for stringent measures against individuals suspected of terrorism or related activities. His detention has attracted significant international attention, particularly regarding the alleged harshness of his pre-trial conditions.
In December 2022, Khalid was granted temporary bail to attend his sister’s wedding, marking one of the rare occasions he has been able to leave prison since his arrest. Khalid's father, Syed Qasim Rasool Ilyas, recounted a meeting with Mamdani during a visit to the United States, where they discussed Khalid’s case. Ilyas noted that Mamdani expressed awareness of the situation and had read Khalid’s correspondence from jail.
In a related development, a group of eight United States lawmakers, including prominent figures such as Jan Schakowsky and Pramila Jayapal, penned a letter to Indian Ambassador Vinay Mohan Kwatra. The letter advocates for a fair and timely trial for Khalid, highlighting concerns about his prolonged pre-trial detention.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) officials reacted strongly to the letter, alleging links between the lawmakers and the Indian National Congress party leader, Rahul Gandhi. BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari claimed that Schakowsky's previous interactions with Gandhi raised questions about the motivations behind the letter. Furthermore, he accused the lawmakers of perpetuating an anti-India narrative.
The letter from the US lawmakers underscored the importance of upholding democratic values and human rights, stating that both the United States and India share a commitment to these principles. It called into question the fairness of the legal proceedings against Khalid and the conditions of his detention.
Zohran Mamdani’s note to Khalid coincides with his recent elevation to the position of mayor, making history as New York City’s first Muslim mayor and the youngest individual to hold the office in generations. Mamdani, a member of the Democratic Socialist movement and a former New York State Assembly representative, has outlined his intention to implement progressive policies prioritising affordability and inclusivity.
In his inaugural remarks, Mamdani described his election as “the honour and the privilege of a lifetime.” Following the ceremonies, he and his wife are expected to relocate from their Queens apartment to the official mayoral residence, Gracie Mansion, located in Manhattan.
This unfolding situation reflects broader discussions about civil liberties, the rights of political activists, and international diplomatic relations, particularly in the context of India's legal framework and human rights standards.
