Zohran Mamdani educates New Yorkers on their rights against ICE raids after recent operations raised concerns.

Zohran Mamdani, the Mayor-elect of New York City, recently shared a video aimed at educating immigrants about their rights in encounters with the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This release comes in the wake of a reported raid on Canal Street that has intensified public concern regarding immigration enforcement in the city.

In the video, Mamdani emphasised, "We can all stand up to ICE if you know your rights," highlighting his commitment to safeguarding the rights of the city’s immigrant population, which exceeds three million residents. He shared this message on social media platform X, encouraging individuals to be informed and to support one another, stating, "Know your rights. Protect your neighbours. New York is — and always will be — a city for all immigrants."

Mamdani asserted that it is illegal for ICE officers to enter private residences, educational institutions, or workplaces without a judicial warrant signed by a judge. He warned that while ICE agents may present documents claiming authority, they are not permitted to deceive individuals regarding their rights. "ICE is legally allowed to lie to you, but you have the right to remain silent," he explained.

The mayor-elect provided practical advice for those confronted by ICE, suggesting they ask, "Am I free to go?" until they receive a definitive response. He also mentioned that filming ICE operations is permissible, provided it does not obstruct the agents. Mamdani urged individuals to remain composed and to avoid impeding investigations or fleeing during such encounters. He reiterated that the right to protest against such actions is constitutionally protected.

Mamdani has positioned himself as a vigorous opponent of aggressive immigration policies, especially following a notably amicable meeting with former President Donald Trump. In closing the video, he stated, "New York will always welcome immigrants, and I will fight each and every day to protect, support and celebrate our immigrant brothers and sisters."

His comments were made shortly after a series of enforcement activities by ICE that have heightened tensions within the city. Reports from ABC News indicated that his advisory was issued soon after federal agents conducted operations in Manhattan, part of a broader crackdown across multiple US cities. Demonstrations erupted last weekend as agents attempted to detain individuals on Canal Street, reminiscent of protests that occurred during a similar operation in Chinatown the previous October.

Tensions escalated last month when protesters confronted police outside a parking facility on Centre and Hester Streets, where federal agents from the US Customs and Border Protection and the Department of Homeland Security were gathering. The situation deteriorated as demonstrators blocked the entrance, ultimately leading to multiple arrests and the temporary halting of the operation.

As the new year approaches, Mamdani is set to be sworn in as mayor on 1 January 2026. His administration's stance on immigration policy is expected to remain steadfast despite the federal government’s ongoing enforcement activities under the previous administration. Mamdani has made it clear that New York will uphold its sanctuary city policies, which limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities, ensuring the protection of vulnerable communities within the city.

In his previous remarks, Mamdani conveyed a strong message about the need for legal protections for immigrants, particularly as many face detention or deportation for minor infractions. He stated, "My concern is that many immigrants are being arrested, detained, and deported for the crime of making a regular court appearance," underscoring the urgency for reforms in immigration enforcement practices.
