NEET Aspirants Denied Entry Due to Traffic Issues in Major Cities

Significant disruptions occurred during the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) across major Indian cities including Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. Many aspiring candidates were unable to attend the exam on time due to complications arising from traffic jams and incorrect locations suggested by online navigation tools.

The situation escalated as a number of students who arrived late were denied entry into examination centres. In Bengaluru, for example, three students were turned away due to late arrivals, while one held an outdated hall ticket from a previous exam date. Witnesses reported students pleading with officials, with one even attempting to scale a fence to gain entry. The exam authorities, however, upheld their policies and refused entry.

Bengaluru South Member of Parliament Tejasvi Surya expressed concern over the situation, attributing the chaos partly to a major political rally held by the Congress party on the same day. Surya took to a social media platform to explain, "As massive traffic disruptions choked Bengaluru, many students were delayed, some reaching exam centres in panic and having to plead with authorities to be allowed inside."

In contrast, Karnataka's Home Minister Priyank Kharge dismissed Surya's claims as misinformation. He clarified that at least one candidate experienced delays because of public transport issues, while emphasising that traffic advisories had been issued well ahead of time to help mitigate potential disruptions.

The political ramifications of these events were immediate. The opposition parties exchanged accusations regarding the management of the NEET exam and traffic conditions in the city. Kharge highlighted the broader context of past incidents linked to NEET, pointing out that more than 22 lakh students faced challenges in previous examinations, which he attributed to government mismanagement.

The NEET examination is a critical assessment for students seeking admission into medical and dental colleges in India. The distressing scenes at exam centres have ignited debates around the responsibility of the authorities in ensuring timely access for students, especially during significant local events.

This year’s NEET has not only spotlighted logistical issues but has also raised questions about the effectiveness of traffic management in urban settings during crucial examination periods, sparking a demand for improved coordination among various governmental departments to prevent such occurrences in the future.
