International Yoga Day 2026: Celebrations Across India
International Yoga Day was celebrated on June 21, 2026, with various events across India, showcasing the significance of yoga as a holistic health practice. The day marked the 12th instance of this global observance, dedicated to emphasising the theme "Yoga for Healthy Ageing."
In Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar joined a yoga session at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU). Addressing an audience of more than 1,500 students and faculty, he described yoga as India’s enduring gift to humanity, rooted in the wisdom of the ancient sage Patanjali.
“Yoga is not just for one day; it should be integrated into daily life. It is accessible for everyone, regardless of age,” Mr. Arlekar stated after the yoga demonstration.
At the Sainik School Amaravathinagar, under Principal Captain Rahul Thiyyath, staff and students participated in yoga exercises from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. The event included various yoga asanas, orchestrated by a team from the Shri Paranjothi Yoga College.
Additionally, around 500 volunteers and officers took part in a yoga celebration at Bharathiar University, with Registrar R. Rajavel inaugurating the event and addressing participants on the theme of wellness through yoga. Maruthi College of Physical Education also hosted a session, with certificates awarded to participating students.
The Isha Foundation organised yoga classes in approximately 1,000 sites across the nation, including 500 in Tamil Nadu, featuring a session titled “Miracle of Mind” which was accessible in six languages.
Meanwhile, in New Delhi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar led members of the diplomatic community in a yoga session to honour the occasion. Posting on social media, he reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message on the importance of making yoga a core part of family life and community wellness.
In an effort to celebrate the day, the Australian High Commission and the French Embassy in New Delhi shared videos depicting their own yoga events, symbolising international collaboration and cultural ties through yoga. The French Embassy emphasised the balance between work stress and personal well-being through their yoga session, while the Australian High Commission showcased their collective practice across India.
Overall, the celebrations for International Yoga Day in 2026 served as a reminder of yoga's universal appeal and benefits, fostering global connectivity and encouraging healthy lifestyles worldwide.
