Naval Collision in Arabian Sea Heightens India-Pakistan Tensions

A naval collision occurred in the North Arabian Sea involving warships from India and Pakistan, escalating existing tensions between the two nations. The incident reportedly involved high-speed manoeuvres from Pakistani naval units, which India's External Affairs Ministry condemned as "unacceptable and unprofessional conduct".

The controversy arose when an Indian frontline naval ship was targeted, prompting reactions from military experts. Captain D K Sharma, a retired Indian Navy officer, described the actions as part of a broader strategy by Pakistani naval captains to assert their credentials through provocative behaviour at sea. He stated, "Any effort that embarrasses or damages India probably has the backing or encouragement of the powers that be."

Vice Admiral Shekhar Sinha, also retired, noted similar past incidents where such reckless naval manoeuvres led to confrontations. He pointed out that the Pakistani Navy often neglects internationally accepted agreements regarding safe distances at sea.

Historical precedents exist for these kinds of incidents; in 2011, the Indian frigate INS Godavari encountered the Pakistani frigate PNS Babur during a mission to assist a hijacked vessel, resulting in damage to the Indian ship while the Pakistani sailors celebrated amid the chaos.

The Indian Navy's position is adamant, with Captain Sharma warning that they would respond appropriately to perceived hostile acts. The incident has prompted formal protests from India to Pakistan, emphasising that the manoeuvres were in violation of Article 10 of a 1991 agreement between the two countries regarding military exercises and naval movements.

India's External Affairs Ministry has made clear that the Charge d’Affaires of Pakistan was informed of the need for caution in naval undertakings, urging observance of relevant agreements to prevent future incidents.

In tandem with these diplomatic efforts, India's Charge d’Affaires in Islamabad will also lodge a protest with the Pakistani foreign ministry, reiterating the concerns raised by the recent collision. As the situation develops, both nations remain on alert regarding their maritime operations in the region.
