Iranians across the country gather for memorials for former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, marking his death amid ongoing conflict.

In a massive display of public mourning, thousands of Iranians have participated in nationwide commemorations for former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was killed on February 28 during US-Israeli military strikes. His assassination catalysed the latest Middle Eastern conflict. These memorial events took place in various cities, including Tehran, Urmia and Gorgan, where individuals were seen carrying portraits of Khamenei. The memorial activities began precisely at 9:40 a.m. local time, coinciding with the moment of his death.

Khamenei, who led Iran for nearly four decades, was an influential figure whose passing has raised significant discussions within both governmental and civil spheres. His son, Mojtaba Khamenei, reportedly did not appear at the ceremonies. Following the strikes that led to his death, the Iranian government responded with military action against US interests and allies in the region, marking a notable escalation in hostilities.

As Iranian state media covered the mourning activities, it was evident that despite the personal sentiments expressed, there were also unanswered questions surrounding Khamenei's final resting place. Reports indicate that authorities have not confirmed the details of his burial, allowing speculation to thrive regarding whether his body has been formally interred or if burial took place in secret.

Forty days following a death bears significant cultural respect in Shiite tradition, a critical factor in shaping the public’s reaction to Khamenei's death. Known as the 'fortieth-day ceremony,' it typically includes visits to graves and communal gatherings for prayer and remembrance. In this instance, however, the absence of a confirmed burial location has added an unusual layer to the proceedings, leading to a mix of tributes and ridicule regarding the way authorities have handled the situation.

On a separate note, an event controversially held at Tehran’s Saint Sarkis Church prior to the nationwide commemoration attracted attention. Attended by Culture Minister Abbas Salehi, it sparked online mockery as many questioned the appropriateness of a religious ceremony conducted in a church tied to Khamenei's legacy, noting the irony given his previous vocal stance on Islam. Social media commentary suggested that holding such an event in a church might have stemmed from security concerns.

Amid these commemorations, tensions between the Iranian regime and its adversarial powers, notably the United States and Israel, continue. On the backdrop of a fragile two-week ceasefire aimed at curtailing hostilities, the chaos of recent weeks remains fresh in the public consciousness. Explosions and defensive activity were noted in several areas as military operations persist, underscoring the region's volatility.

In a statement, the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps expressed that Khamenei’s legacy would endure through the commitment to the course he charted during his leadership. The nationwide memorials seem to reflect ongoing support for governmental narratives and ideological continuity even amidst challenging circumstances.

Internationally, the Islamic Revolutionary Guards have been designated as a terrorist organisation by multiple countries, marking a continued pushback against Iran's militia activities in the region. This declaration, echoing through various nations, reflects global concerns about Iran’s influence and military strategies.

As Iranians navigate the complex web of grief, national pride and international scrutiny, the legacy of Ali Khamenei remains a contentious issue both domestically and abroad. The commemorations not only serve as a tribute but also as a stark reminder of the current fragile state of the country amidst a prolonged conflict.
