Controversial Sting Video Allegations Affect West Bengal Elections
A sting video involving Humayun Kabir causes AIMIM to sever ties and raises serious allegations ahead of West Bengal Assembly elections.

A political controversy is unfolding in West Bengal as a purported sting video involving Humayun Kabir, former member of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has led to significant fallout from his party and its alliances ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has publicly stated that it will terminate its alliance with Kabir's Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) following the release of the video by the ruling TMC.

In the video, Kabir allegedly discusses making controversial statements about the Muslim community and his purported connections with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Kabir, who was suspended from the TMC last year and subsequently founded AJUP, has rejected the video, labelling it as "AI-generated". At a press conference on Thursday, TMC officials suggested that the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) is involved in a multi-crore scheme aimed at undermining Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to ensure BJP's electoral success.

They released claims from the video where Kabir allegedly indicates that he had communication with the PMO and received advice to coordinate with BJP-affiliated leaders, including Suvendu Adhikari and Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister of Assam. The TMC shared clips from the video, which purportedly feature Kabir stating, "it is easy to fool Muslims," referring to the sensitive Babri Masjid issue and suggesting a demand for Rs 200 crore in advance funding.

The TMC's Twitter account highlighted the video's contents, asserting that Kabir had received Rs 1,000 crore from the BJP to mislead minority voters. Kabir reportedly outlined strategies to redirect Muslim votes away from TMC, claiming that this shift would benefit the BJP. The TMC is calling for an investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) into the allegations made in the video.

However, Kabir has accused TMC leaders of orchestrating a smear campaign against him, announcing plans to file defamation lawsuits against several party members. Despite this, the authenticity of the video has not been independently verified by India Today TV. Kabir insists he has not had contact with any BJP leaders since November 2019, challenging TMC to provide evidence of any such interactions.

In his rebuttal, he named several high-profile BJP politicians, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, while asserting the claims against him are unfounded. He accused TMC leaders, including Mamata Banerjee, of intimidation tactics stemming from their fear of losing Muslim voters. Following the video's emergence, AIMIM announced its intention to run independently in the West Bengal elections, highlighting that it cannot endorse any remarks undermining the Muslim community's integrity.

AIMIM stated that it seeks to offer marginalised communities an independent political voice. This shift comes just weeks after AIMIM had publicly formed an alliance with Kabir's AJUP. As the political landscape shifts rapidly, the 294-member West Bengal Assembly elections are set to occur in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with vote counting scheduled for May 4.
