MTV VMAs 2026: Madonna and Taylor Swift Shine at Major Awards

Madonna and Taylor Swift were the standout winners at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, held at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles. The ceremony showcased a plethora of female talent and recorded a significant cultural moment for the industry.

Madonna entered the evening with 13 nominations, the highest of any artist, and ultimately took home three awards. These included best dance, best collaboration for her work with Sabrina Carpenter, and the prestigious artist of the year award. During her acceptance speech, Madonna reflected on her lengthy career and offered encouragement to the audience: “My hope for all of you here tonight is that you … do the same. Find yourself and believe in yourself.”

Taylor Swift, who won three awards including the coveted video of the year for her track The Fate of Ophelia, also received the inaugural artist director honour, recognising her contributions as a music video director. Swift dedicated her win to the late Dolly Parton, who passed away the previous month.

Swift praised Parton, stating, “Listening to her songs is like watching the best music video you have ever seen in your life.” She premiered her new music video Patient Zero during the event, which features a narrative of conflict with an ex.

The event featured performances from a variety of artists, including Kacey Musgraves, who honoured Parton by harmonising with archival footage of her performing her hit I Will Always Love You. K-pop sensation Lisa also took home the award for best pop for her song Dream, while newcomer Sienna Spiro was crowned best new artist by audience vote.

Madonna notably opened the show with her first performance in 23 years, featuring songs from her latest project Confessions II, while recalling a humorous moment from her first VMAs performance 43 years ago.

The awards ceremony, which included tributes to the late George Michael through performances by various artists, highlighted the current trend of celebrating female talent in a predominantly male-oriented industry.

In addition to airing live on multiple channels, the ceremony was hosted by rapper Snoop Dogg, who kept the atmosphere lively throughout the night. The event not only celebrated achievements in the music industry but also aimed to resonate with a younger audience in an era increasingly dominated by digital streaming.

Further recognising enduring influence, Nirvana received the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award for their significant impact on music videos. Krist Novoselic, the band's bassist, noted Kurt Cobain’s legacy and the authentic connection their music still has today.

In other award categories not covered during the broadcast, BTS claimed top honours for best group and song of the year, among other recognisable winners.

The evening proved to be a reaffirmation of the power of music and the voices of its female artists as they captivate audiences and shape the future of the industry.
