Mojtaba Khamenei's Health Deteriorates Amid US-Iran Tensions
Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has reportedly been recovering from multiple severe injuries sustained during a military strike on February 28, which resulted in the death of his father. Since then, Mojtaba has not made any public appearances, and his communication has primarily been through written messages, as stated in a report by the New York Times.
According to several senior Iranian officials, Mojtaba Khamenei is described as being 'gravely wounded' but maintains a sharp mental state and is actively engaged in matters despite his physical condition. His injuries necessitate significant medical interventions, including multiple surgeries on one leg and one hand, which has not regained full functionality. Furthermore, it was detailed that he suffered extensive burn injuries to his face and lips, severely impacting his ability to speak and ultimately requiring plastic surgery.
To protect his location from potential threats, including surveillance from Israeli forces, Mojtaba Khamenei's access has been tightly restricted, and he is mostly attended by medical professionals. Senior military and government officials are notably avoiding visits, fearful that this might disclose his whereabouts.
Despite these challenges, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, a heart surgeon, along with the country's health minister, are involved in his ongoing care. Communication with Mojtaba is facilitated through a network of trusted couriers who deliver written messages back and forth via secure routes.
Mojtaba has refrained from making any public statements, reportedly aiming to avoid appearing weak during his anticipated first public address. As tensions between Iran and the United States persist, a temporary ceasefire is currently in effect, with both parties engaged in discussions aimed at finding a sustainable resolution to the conflict. The first round of talks, brokered by Pakistan, ended in a stalemate, but a second round is expected soon, with US President Donald Trump hinting that further negotiations could occur later this week.
