BJP Leader Predicts Victory in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu Elections
BJP president Nitin Nabin asserts the party will win in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, citing public discontent with current governments.

New Delhi, 23 April (PTI) – Nitin Nabin, president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), expressed certainty on Thursday that the party will secure an “absolute majority” in the upcoming Assembly elections in West Bengal. He claimed this victory would end the 15-year tenure of the Trinamool Congress, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. In an interview with News18 Network, Nabin also predicted that the BJP-led coalition would retain power in Assam and Puducherry.

According to Nabin, the electoral landscape differs across the five states holding elections, yet he believes the circumstances are favourable for the BJP. "In Assam and Puducherry, we will certainly repeat our government. There is absolutely no doubt about it,” he stated regarding prospects in the four states preparing for elections: Kerala, Assam, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal, along with the Union territory of Puducherry.

When asked about the likelihood of BJP forming a government in West Bengal for the first time, Nabin asserted, “Hundred per cent. Given the mood of the people in the state, the BJP will form the government with an absolute majority.” He declined to specify the number of seats they expect to win, stating that such predictions would be clearer as the voting process continues.

The first phase of voting for 152 seats in West Bengal is currently taking place, with the second phase covering 142 additional seats scheduled for 29 April. Meanwhile, elections are also being conducted in Tamil Nadu. Voting in Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry occurred on 9 April, with results set to be announced on 4 May.

Nabin highlighted his confidence that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) would achieve success in Tamil Nadu, citing increasing public discontent with the state’s ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party. He commented, “There is growing public sentiment against the corruption, anarchy, and anti-Sanatan mindset of the ruling DMK.” Nabin noted that the BJP’s role in Tamil Nadu is supportive, as the AIADMK—its alliance partner—leads the electoral battle.

Based on his observations from campaigning in Tamil Nadu, Nabin suggested that the DMK might face significant electoral challenges. Asked about the role of actor and politician Vijay, who leads the TVK party, in the elections, Nabin remarked that the impact of his involvement remains uncertain until the results are revealed. He elaborated that while celebrity influence is prominent in politics, effectiveness in governance requires consistent engagement and effort.

On whether a post-poll alliance with Vijay would be possible, Nabin indicated that it is unnecessary. “We already have an active alliance in place in Tamil Nadu, and all our partners are contesting the elections together. As of today, I do not see any possibility of even considering a post-election context. I am confident that the NDA will form its government in Tamil Nadu on its own,” he affirmed.

Nabin further discussed Kerala, stating that the BJP has made significant progress in the state, increasing its vote share from 1.5 percent to 20 percent in recent elections. He views this as evidence of the BJP’s potential to become a formidable presence in Kerala. “While the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF) may continue with their ‘match-fixing’ charade, we are determined to make our presence felt even more strongly and effectively,” he concluded.
