India Condemns Trump's 'Hellhole' Remark Amidst Diplomatic Tensions
India criticises US President Trump's derogatory comment, asserting it misrepresents the India-US relationship and signals discontent with diplomatic ties.

India has publicly condemned remarks made by US President Donald Trump, who recently endorsed a social media post describing India as a 'hellhole'. The comment has been characterised by Indian authorities as 'uninformed, inappropriate and in poor taste', firmly stating that such remarks do not accurately represent the strong ties between India and the United States.

Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, addressed the issue during a media briefing, clarifying New Delhi's position. 'We have noted the original comments as well as the subsequent clarification issued by the US Embassy. The remarks certainly do not reflect the reality of the India-US relationship, which is built on mutual respect and shared interests,' he stated.

The controversy arose on social media when President Trump reshared content from conservative broadcaster Michael Savage. Savage's comments included references to various countries, including India and China, labelling them as 'hellholes' while voicing criticism of birthright citizenship in the United States. Savage claimed that children born in the US, even to undocumented or temporarily resident parents, benefit from the Citizenship Clause, allowing their families to immigrate to the US.

In his podcast, Savage claimed that the law is exploited predominantly by immigrants from India and China, suggesting that it enables expanded immigration from those nations. Trump's repost included both a written transcript and a video clip where Savage urged that the issue should be resolved through a national referendum rather than a legal framework determined by the US Supreme Court.

Savage's accompanying remarks further compounded the issue by referring to Indian and Chinese immigrants in derogatory terms, stating that they had 'stepped on our flag'. After facing backlash over Trump's endorsement of Savage's comments, the US Embassy quickly issued a statement to reaffirm the positive nature of US-India relations. A spokesperson noted, 'The President has remarked that India is a great country with a very good friend of mine at the top,' potentially aiming to quell the diplomatic fallout.

Trump's repost comes in the midst of ongoing legal battles concerning birthright citizenship in the US. His administration is currently appealing lower court decisions that hindered an executive order instituted early in 2025. The order sought to limit automatic citizenship for certain US-born children and has faced significant legal challenges, with some judges labelling it unconstitutional.

In the political arena, Indian Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge has called out Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his silence on Trump’s controversial comment. He questioned if Modi would respond to the 'intimidation' felt by millions of Indians and highlighted the contributions of the Indian diaspora to America’s success. Kharge's remarks reflected a growing tension in Indian public sentiment towards the US, marked by a desire for a stronger response from the Indian government.

As diplomatic relations between the two nations continue to evolve, the incident serves as a flashpoint that could affect future engagements. Analysts suggest that maintaining a respectful dialogue is essential for the partnership that both nations aim to uphold, especially in the face of inflammatory remarks from some leaders.

This incident not only underscores the fragility of diplomatic relations shaped by public comments but also the implications of political rhetoric in shaping international perceptions and cooperation between nations.
