Modi Voices Concern Over Reports of Attack on Putin's Residence

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed serious concern on Tuesday regarding reports that Russian President Vladimir Putin's residence was targeted, emphasising the need for restraint and a renewed focus on diplomatic efforts.

In a statement posted on the social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi said he was 'deeply concerned' about the allegations and highlighted that diplomatic engagement remains the most effective means to address ongoing conflicts. He stated, "Deeply concerned by reports of the targeting of the residence of the President of the Russian Federation. Ongoing diplomatic efforts offer the most viable path toward ending hostilities and achieving peace. We urge all concerned to remain focused on these efforts and to avoid any actions that could undermine them."

Russia has claimed that the Ukrainian military launched a drone attack targeting President Putin’s state residence, which is located between Moscow and St Petersburg. According to a report from Reuters, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov alleged that 91 long-range drones were deployed against the residence in the Novgorod region on December 28 and 29, all of which were intercepted and destroyed by Russian air defence systems.

Lavrov characterised the incident as a 'terrorist attack' and indicated that Russia would reconsider its negotiating stance regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. He further mentioned that Russia had already identified targets in Ukraine for what he termed 'retaliation strikes.'

In response, Ukraine has categorically dismissed the Russian accusations. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy referred to Russia’s claims as 'lies,' asserting that Moscow is attempting to use this narrative to rationalise further assaults on Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv. Zelenskyy commented, "This alleged ‘residence strike’ story is a complete fabrication intended to justify additional attacks against Ukraine, as well as Russia’s refusal to take necessary steps to end the war."

The Ukrainian leader insisted that Ukraine does not engage in actions that undermine diplomatic efforts, accusing Russia of doing the contrary, and urged the global community not to remain silent as the pursuit of lasting peace continues.

Ukrainians Face Ongoing Power Cuts

In the wake of recent Russian air strikes, residents of Vyshhorod, a town located approximately 20 kilometres north of Kyiv, have been enduring their third consecutive day without electricity or heating. With night-time temperatures dropping to around minus three degrees Celsius, many have taken refuge in a small shelter that is equipped with heating and electricity, providing a temporary respite from the cold.

The shelter, described by locals as an 'islet of warmth and power,' has become a gathering place for approximately 20 individuals who spend their days charging mobile phones and laptops, allowing them to stay connected and continue their work despite the challenging circumstances.
