Microsoft Trials New Menu Bar Feature in Windows 11 PowerToys
Microsoft's PowerToys team is testing a new dock feature for Windows 11, promising enhanced usability similar to macOS and Linux menu bars.

Microsoft is currently exploring the addition of a menu bar to its Windows 11 operating system through the PowerToys utility. This proposed feature, referred to as the Command Palette Dock, aims to provide users with a quick-access tool for various functionalities, mirroring features available in macOS and Linux systems. The Command Palette Dock serves as an optional user interface component that can be configured by users according to their preferences. Niels Laute, a senior product manager at Microsoft, stated, “The dock is designed to be highly configurable.”

Users will have the ability to place the dock on any edge of the screen—top, left, right, or bottom—and can pin extensions in three segments of the dock: start, centre, and end. This flexibility is intended to make essential tools and information easily accessible without disrupting a user's workflow. In its default state, the dock resembles the menu bars seen on macOS and Linux distributions, occupying the top part of the display and allowing for quick glances at key resources such as CPU and RAM usage.

Additional functionalities will include music controls and shortcuts for various applications, which can be pinned within the dock. As Microsoft continues to refine this concept, it has sought feedback from users regarding the implementation of this feature, using its GitHub platform to collect insights and opinions from the community. The Command Palette, which was launched in 2022, provides a similar utility to Apple’s Spotlight, enabling rapid access to commands and applications.

Developers interested in experiencing this feature can access a preliminary version by downloading it from Microsoft’s PowerToys GitHub page and compiling it in Visual Studio. However, it is important to note that this feature is not yet part of the official PowerToys release. As the PowerToys team gathers user feedback, there remains the potential for a formal rollout in the upcoming weeks or months depending on community interest and support.

The exploration of this menu bar reflects Microsoft's ongoing commitment to enhancing the usability of Windows 11 and addressing user needs in a competitive operating system landscape. With the rise of alternative operating environments, the introduction of such features could further align Windows with the evolving demands of users. As developers and users alike continue to engage with Microsoft’s feedback processes, the future of this Command Palette Dock feature will depend heavily on the insights and reactions it receives during this testing phase.
