Passenger vehicle sales in May 2026 surged, led by Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors, indicating a strong demand in the Indian market.

The Indian passenger vehicle (PV) market experienced a significant boost in May 2026, with leading manufacturers reporting record sales figures. Total wholesales for the PV sector reached approximately 4.4 lakh units during the month, marking a notable growth trajectory.

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, the market leader, announced total wholesales of 242,688 units, reflecting a 35% increase year-on-year. Of these, domestic sales accounted for 193,535 units, up 40% compared to the same period last year. The company also reported a 34% rise in exports, reaching 41,914 units in May.

Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer, Marketing & Sales at Maruti Suzuki, shared insights into the demand dynamics, stating, "We are improving every month. We had record sales in April, and now have surpassed that record in May. We have seen improvement in every segment, including small cars." He also noted a significant increase in bookings for CNG vehicles, which surged by 40% after petrol prices rose, and electric vehicle bookings doubled.

Following Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd recorded domestic wholesales of 59,090 units in May, marking a year-on-year increase of 42%. Exports also saw a 45% rise, albeit with only 700 units. In a notable trend, the domestic and export electric vehicle sales surged 85% year-on-year to reach 10,517 units.

Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd reported passenger vehicle sales of 58,021 units, up 11% year-on-year. The company also noted a 19% increase in domestic sales of commercial vehicles, leading to overall total sales of 99,636 units, which represents a 20% increase compared to the previous year.

Hyundai Motor India Ltd's domestic market sales reached 47,837 units in May, representing a 9.1% rise year-on-year. Total sales for the month were recorded at 61,137 units, up 4.1%.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor Ltd sold 30,574 units domestically, up 4% year-on-year, and including exports, the total reached 33,128 units, reflecting a 7% growth. Kia Motor India celebrated its highest-ever sales in May, reporting 27,586 units sold, a growth of 23.6%.

In the face of ongoing supply chain challenges and rising commodity prices, JSW MG Motor India maintained its performance with sales of 6,048 units. Renault India also reported a significant increase, selling 4,114 units in May 2026 compared to 2,502 units a year prior, reflecting a growth of 64%.

This surge in sales across various manufacturers underscores a robust recovery and increasing consumer confidence in the Indian automobile market as it continues to rebound from earlier disruptions.
