Marc-André ter Stegen joins Ajax on a season-long loan from Barcelona, with support from former teammate Frenkie de Jong.

Marc-André ter Stegen, the German goalkeeper, has officially joined Ajax on a loan deal from FC Barcelona that lasts until June 2027. Both clubs confirmed that Ajax will cover a small percentage of Ter Stegen's salary, while Barcelona continues to bear the majority of the financial responsibility.

Frenkie de Jong, a fellow former player at Ajax and current midfielder for Barcelona, expressed his joy at Ter Stegen’s move in a video message. De Jong stated, 'I think everyone at the club is very happy as well,' and praised his friend's qualities, adding, 'They’re getting a great player and a great person.'

De Jong also shared insights about his own experience at Ajax, encouraging Ter Stegen, saying, 'The fans are incredible, the people are incredible, and the club is a wonderful place.' He reassured Ter Stegen of the support he would receive in Amsterdam, closing with, 'All the best, and if you ever need anything, you can always call me.'

In response to De Jong's supportive words, Ter Stegen expressed his gratitude, noting it gave him confidence for this new chapter in his career. He remarked, 'It’s good for me to know that I’m in good hands.' This new opportunity comes after a challenging period for Ter Stegen, where injury issues significantly impacted his playing time.

Before joining Ajax, the goalkeeper struggled with fitness problems during his recent loan to Girona, where he made only two appearances due to a left hamstring injury that ultimately sidelined him for the season and the FIFA World Cup.

Now back in the Netherlands, Ter Stegen reunites with head coach Michel, who previously coached him at Girona, as he aims to establish himself as Ajax’s starting goalkeeper and regain his top form. The club will be looking to integrate him into their setup for the upcoming season as they hope to benefit from his experience and talent.
