Mandatory Aadhaar Authentication for LPG Subsidies Begins October 1

Beginning on October 1, 2026, consumers of domestic liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) will be required to complete Biometric Aadhaar Authentication to receive subsidised cylinder refills. The Indian government has stated that this authentication is compulsory for all eligible users seeking to benefit from subsidy rates. Those who have already completed the authentication process will not need to take any further actions to continue receiving subsidies. However, consumers who do not finish the authentication will be forced to purchase LPG cylinders at market prices, which are significantly higher compared to subsidised rates.

The initiative aims to streamline the subsidy distribution and curb fraudulent claims. As per official sources, around 274.3 million consumers are already registered under this biometric system, thereby expediting the process for millions of others who may need to authenticate their identities. The use of Aadhaar, a unique identification system implemented by the Government of India, is designed to provide a secure and reliable means of verifying identity.

To assist citizens in this transition, various digital channels have been established where consumers can complete the authentication. Additionally, a toll-free helpline is available for those who may require further assistance or guidance through the process. The government has encouraged all eligible users to ensure compliance before the deadline to avoid disruptions in their LPG supply.
