Mamata Banerjee files a petition in Calcutta High Court contesting her defeat by Suvendu Adhikari in Bhabanipur assembly elections.

Mamata Banerjee, the former Chief Minister of West Bengal, has formally approached the Calcutta High Court to contest the results of the Bhabanipur assembly election. This election was won by the current Chief Minister, Suvendu Adhikari, who secured 73,917 votes against Banerjee's 58,812, marking a margin of 15,105 votes.

The assembly elections took place in April, and the results were declared on 4 May. Shortly before the results announcement, Banerjee alleged that she was assaulted at the counting centre and claimed that her election agents were denied entry. The Election Commission of India has refuted these claims, stating that all procedures were followed appropriately.

In her petition filed today, Banerjee's legal representative, Senior Advocate Kalyan Bandyopadhyay, confirmed that they were challenging the legitimacy of Adhikari's win. Bandyopadhyay reiterated Banerjee's assertions of misconduct at the election counting venue, stating, "The election was conducted improperly. After 12 rounds of counting, both her election agent and Banerjee herself were assaulted and removed from the premises."

This legal action comes in the wake of Banerjee's historic leadership in West Bengal, where she has been a prominent political figure for years. Following Adhikari’s victory, he became the first Chief Minister from the Bharatiya Janata Party in the state. The outcome of this petition could have significant implications for the future of politics in West Bengal, as it highlights the escalating tensions between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP following their intense electoral rivalry.

Banerjee's team is expected to present their case, seeking a thorough examination of the election procedures followed during the Bhabanipur constituency vote. As this situation unfolds, it will be crucial to monitor any further developments from the High Court regarding the petition and its potential ramifications on the political landscape in the region.
