Maharashtra Winter Legislature Session to Take Place in Nagpur
The Maharashtra legislature's winter session is scheduled to commence on 8 December 2025 in Nagpur, concluding on 14 December 2025. This session will notably take place over a week, including the weekend, a deviation from the traditional format that often spans between 10 to 15 working days. The decision to shorten the session was made by the legislature's business advisory committee during a meeting held on Wednesday.
State officials have indicated that the reduced duration is primarily due to the ongoing local body elections across Maharashtra. Historically, the winter session is hosted in Nagpur as part of the state government's commitment to decentralised governance.
Despite currently lacking a Leader of the Opposition in both legislative houses, it is anticipated that opposition members will raise significant concerns during the session. Key issues expected to be addressed include the agrarian crisis exacerbated by unseasonal rainfall, the plight of farmers affected by crop insurance fraud, demands for Maratha reservations, and various allegations of corruption against ministers.
Ajit Pawar, the Deputy Chief Minister, is likely to face scrutiny from opposition lawmakers over his son Parth Pawar's involvement in the Pune land scam. Additionally, allegations surrounding corruption and irregularities in the ongoing civic body elections are set to feature prominently in legislative discussions. Bhaskar Jadhav, a Member of the Legislative Assembly from the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction), suggested that the state government is attempting to avoid confrontation with the opposition amid these scandals, which prompted the decision to condense the session to just one week.
Preparations for the upcoming session are expected to incur costs of approximately Rs 100 crore, which will cover renovation and construction work necessary for accommodating the legislative meetings.
