Maharashtra Legislature's Winter Session Scheduled for December 2025

The winter session of the Maharashtra Legislature is set to commence on 8 December 2025, in Nagpur, and will conclude on 14 December 2025. This session will notably run through the weekend, a deviation from the traditional schedule. The decision for a condensed one-week session was made during a meeting of the legislature's business advisory committee on Wednesday.

Historically, the winter session has been held in Nagpur as part of the state's initiative towards decentralised governance and typically lasts between 10 to 15 working days. However, an official indicated that the ongoing local body elections in Maharashtra have necessitated this shortened format.

"The session has been curtailed to just one week due to the simultaneous local body polls across the state," the official stated, underscoring the impact of the electoral process on legislative functions.

Despite the absence of a Leader of the Opposition in both houses of the legislature, opposition parties are anticipated to vigorously challenge the ruling MahaYuti government on various pressing issues. Among the key topics are the agrarian crisis exacerbated by unseasonal rains, the plight of farmers affected by crop insurance fraud, and the demand for Maratha reservations. Additionally, allegations of scams involving various government ministers are expected to feature prominently in discussions.

Ajit Pawar, Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister, is likely to face significant scrutiny from opposition members concerning the Pune land scam case linked to his son, Parth Pawar. Furthermore, accusations regarding corruption and irregularities within the current civic body elections are anticipated to be raised in the legislature.

Bhaskar Jadhav, a Member of the Legislative Assembly from the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), commented on the situation, suggesting that the government is reluctant to confront the opposition amid numerous corruption allegations. He stated, "The state government has limited the session to just one week to avoid facing the opposition on various scams."

In preparation for the session, an estimated expenditure of ₹100 crore is projected to cover the necessary renovations and construction work in the city of Nagpur. This investment aims to ensure that the legislative assembly is adequately equipped for the upcoming discussions.
