Lionel Messi scores twice as Argentina beats Austria 2-0 at the World Cup 2026, becoming the all-time leading scorer.

Lionel Messi emerged as the leading scorer in the history of the FIFA World Cup after scoring twice in Argentina's 2-0 victory against Austria. The match, held in Texas, advanced Argentina into the knockout stage of the tournament.

The Argentine captain's first goal came just before half-time, striking with his characteristic left foot following a well-executed team play. This goal marked Messi's 17th World Cup goal, adding to his hat-trick from Argentina's opening match.

In the closing moments of injury time, Messi sealed the game after navigating through a crowded penalty area to score again, despite having missed an earlier penalty shot. The spirited crowd of 70,649 fans, predominantly supporting Argentina, witnessed the dramatic encounter at the Dallas Cowboys' stadium.

Early in the match, Argentina was awarded a penalty when Lautaro Martínez was fouled by two opponents. However, Messi's attempt from the spot was disappointing as he dragged the ball wide of the goal, a surprise considering his high standards. The player’s challenges from the penalty spot have been notable; he has missed crucial penalties in previous World Cups, including against Poland in the 2022 tournament.

Despite controlling much of the first half, Argentina faced strong defensive tactics from Ralf Rangnick's Austria, who had won their opening match against Jordan. The Austrian side managed not to register a single shot on target before Messi's first goal.

After scoring, the pace of the game slowed, with both sides creating fewer opportunities. Austria, despite some threatening movements, struggled to penetrate Argentina's defence. The only real threat to goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez came late in the match.

Messi’s performance underscored his pivotal role in the team; after striking his second goal from close range, he commented on the importance of the match. In an interview with Telemundo, he said, “I’m really happy about the win, especially as it’s such a crucial victory, hard-fought and well-earned.” He added, “This is the World Cup; it was a very evenly matched, very intense match, and we’re happy to have picked up six points and to have already qualified.”

As the tournament progresses, Argentina will look to build on this victory as they aim for further success in the competition.
