Laura Wolvaardt Makes History with Century Against Zimbabwe

Laura Wolvaardt has achieved a historic milestone in women's cricket by scoring an impressive 126 runs in the third T20 International match against Zimbabwe. This performance has not only led the South African team to a commanding victory but has also brought her level with India's Smriti Mandhana for the most centuries in women's international cricket, with a total of 18 centuries.

Wolvaardt's remarkable innings came off just 62 balls and included a staggering sixteen fours and four sixes, positioning her as a key player in the match. Her strike rate of 203.22 not only surpassed her previous best of 115*, achieved against Ireland in December, but also marked the highest T20I score by a South African woman, breaking the former record held by Shandre Fritz.

The South African women's cricket team set a formidable target, reaching 200 runs for the loss of just one wicket by the end of their innings. Karabo Meso provided valuable support with a half-century, scoring 50 runs off 51 balls.

In response, Zimbabwe struggled to keep pace, finding themselves under pressure from early outstanding bowling from South Africa. The hosts slumped to a precarious 29 runs for 4 wickets by the conclusion of the powerplay, later falling to 35 runs for 6 wickets due to continued pressure from South African bowlers.

Annerie Dercksen was particularly impactful, taking a remarkable five wickets for just 15 runs, marking her first five-wicket haul in international cricket. Zimbabwe was eventually dismissed for 120 runs, handing South Africa an 80-run victory.

Michelle Mavunga was the highest scorer for Zimbabwe, contributing 41 runs off 23 balls. Other notable contributions came from Nyasha Gwanzura, who scored 28 runs, Christine Mutasa with 19, and Loryn Phiri who added 14.

Previously, South Africa had established dominance in the series, winning the first match comfortably and following it up with another comprehensive victory in the second match. The team now leads the five-match series 3-0.

The fourth T20 International is scheduled for 17 September, where South Africa will aim to complete a clean sweep in the series.
