Kimi Antonelli Crowned Youngest Formula One World Champion
Kimi Antonelli has made history by becoming the youngest Formula One World Champion, achieving this remarkable status at the age of 20 years and 68 days. His victory was confirmed during a dramatic race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City, where he finished third.
The Italian driver, representing the Mercedes team, only needed to secure a ninth-place finish to clinch the title, but his strong performance ensured he stood proudly on the podium. His achievement marks the first time an Italian has become a Formula One champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953.
During the race, Antonelli exhibited controlled driving amid significant challenges from competitors. Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing took the victory, while Lewis Hamilton, racing for Ferrari, finished in second place despite a complicated and sometimes tense race involving team dynamics.
Antonelli appeared visibly emotional as he crossed the finish line. He expressed his feelings over the team radio, saying, "Thank you so much. We did it. We did it." This sentiment reflected both the joy of the moment and the culmination of an exceptional season.
The race itself, characterised by its intense competition and several safety car incidents, was particularly eventful. One of the critical moments occurred when Charles Leclerc of Ferrari encountered conflict while battling for position. His aggressive driving led to a five-second penalty after he cut a corner while attempting to gain an advantage over teammate Hamilton. This incident highlighted some internal tension within the Ferrari team.
Mercedes Team Principal, Toto Wolff, praised Antonelli's achievement, emphasizing the journey he has taken to reach this milestone. He noted the skepticism surrounding Antonelli's readiness for Formula One last year but reaffirmed the faith Mercedes had in his talent and potential.
Following the race, Antonelli remarked on the incredible experiences of the season and the support he received from the Mercedes team and his family. He conveyed gratitude for the trust placed in him, stating, "I definitely felt more tension coming into this weekend, knowing what was possible, so getting it done today is a huge relief."
Meanwhile, George Russell, Antonelli’s teammate, experienced a challenging race. He started from the front row but suffered an early setback when he made contact with fellow driver Hadjar, resulting in a 10-second penalty. Despite the difficulties, he managed to finish sixth, vowing to refocus for the upcoming Brazilian Grand Prix.
As the season progresses, Mercedes holds a commanding lead in the Constructors’ Championship, having accumulated a total of 630 points, with Ferrari trailing at 504 points. The next Grand Prix in Brazil will be crucial as they look to clinch this title as well.
This historic victory for Antonelli not only sets a new record in Formula One but also opens doors for a bright future in his still-young career in motorsport.
