Kalyan Banerjee Criticises Nephew Abhishek Amid TMC Turmoil
Kolkata - In a significant escalation within the Trinamool Congress, Kalyan Banerjee, a senior leader and MP, has publicly denounced the party's general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee, labelling him as 'arrogant'. During a statement made on June 11, Kalyan issued a stark ultimatum to party leader Mamata Banerjee, demanding that she choose between him or her nephew. His remarks come amid a wave of dissent within the party, following a considerable exodus of MPs and MLAs.
Kalyan Banerjee has expressed dissatisfaction with Abhishek's conduct, claiming that his attitude has contributed to the party's recent electoral failures. "Because of him, we have lost the elections. The party is facing these problems because of him," Kalyan remarked, highlighting his discontent. He has now withdrawn from representing Abhishek in a legal matter, stating, "I do not like this arrogant attitude. One must respect their seniors." After having represented the Diamond Harbour MP in a high-profile case, he explained that the decision to withdraw arose from a lack of consultation regarding another writ petition filed in connection with the same issue.
The internal strife within the party has intensified in light of the recent electoral defeat, which marked the end of its 15-year governance in West Bengal. At least 20 Lok Sabha members and a significant number of MLAs have defected or expressed support for factions within the party that oppose Abhishek Banerjee. Kalyan, a long-time ally of Mamata Banerjee, has suggested that the factionalism is spurred by perceived nepotism and inadequate recognition of senior party leaders' contributions.
Despite his criticisms of Abhishek, Kalyan Banerjee affirmed his continued commitment to the party and stated, "I will continue to appear for cases related to the party." His comments come amid a growing chorus of disapproval within the ranks of the Trinamool Congress, with many leaders voicing their concerns regarding the current leadership style.
The ongoing dissent points to a potential fracture within the party, which has seen a historical level of rebellion against its established leadership. The situation remains fluid, with pressure mounting on Mamata Banerjee to address the divisions within her party and restore cohesion in the wake of a tumultuous political landscape.
