BJP-led NDA Secures 19 Rajya Sabha Seats Unopposed Amid Controversy
In a significant political development, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies won 19 Rajya Sabha seats without facing any opposition on Thursday. This event has raised concerns within rival political factions, especially the Indian National Congress (INC). Among these, three seats were expected from Madhya Pradesh, where controversy brewed as Congress candidate Meenakshi Natarajan's nomination was not reinstated by the Returning Officer. The INC alleged that her disqualification was unjust and planned.
The election results also saw five candidates from the I.N.D.I.A coalition emerge victorious without contest. Elections for two additional seats in Jharkhand will see Congress challenging the nomination of Parimal Nathwani, an independent candidate alleged to have connections with the BJP. Congress leaders pointed to apparent discrepancies in Nathwani's nomination and expressed concerns over the election's fairness.
Commenting on the unfolding situation, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, claimed, "after ‘Vote Chori’ and ‘Sarkar Chori’ – the BJP-EC jugalbandi has finished the contest before it has even begun with ‘Seat Chori’." He expressed concerns that the BJP finds it easier to manipulate elections than to win them legitimately.
In the broader electoral landscape, 24 seats were filled without any contest at all; the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) held 16 of these sitting seats, while the opposing camp retained 8. Particularly contentious was the situation in Madhya Pradesh, where the Returning Officer faced backlash for upholding the rejection of Natarajan's candidacy due to a legal notice that was not an official first information report.
On the other hand, elections in Karnataka allowed the Congress party to secure three seats, with Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge being one of the elected members, a significant gain from their previous standing. Additionally, in Andhra Pradesh, the NDA captured all four available seats, consisting of three for the Telugu Desam Party and one for the Jana Sena party.
The BJP also strengthened its presence in Gujarat, winning all four available seats there, including reclaiming one seat previously held by the Congress. In Rajasthan, BJP candidates Satish Poonia and Alka Gurjar were elected unopposed alongside Congress candidate Neeraj Dangi, maintaining the status quo in that state.
In the northeastern state of Mizoram, the ruling Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) is expected to clinch a seat, while the National People's Party (NPP) and the BJP secured unopposed seats in Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh respectively.
In summary, the recent Rajya Sabha elections illustrate the shifting dynamics within Indian politics, showcasing both the strength of the NDA and the opposition's struggle to address ongoing electoral disputes and concerns surrounding the integrity of the election process.
