Julian Alvarez Confirmed as Transfer Target for Arsenal and Barcelona
Diego Simeone, the manager of Atletico Madrid, has acknowledged that Arsenal is among several clubs interested in signing forward Julian Alvarez. The Gunners may face stiff competition from Paris Saint-Germain and FC Barcelona, both of whom have also expressed interest in the 26-year-old striker. Simeone made these remarks during a press conference prior to Atletico's Champions League semi-final first leg against Arsenal at Metropolitano Stadium.
"I'm not inside Julian Alvarez's head," Simeone stated when questioned about the ongoing transfer speculation. "It’s normal that an extraordinary player like Julian Alvarez is wanted by Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona. It’s normal because he’s very good."
Since joining Atletico Madrid from Manchester City for £82 million, Julian Alvarez has netted 48 goals in 104 appearances. This achievement comes after winning back-to-back Premier League titles and being part of the squad that completed a treble during the 2022/23 season.
Alvarez has been a crucial asset for Atletico, although he has missed their last two matches due to a minor injury. Nevertheless, he is expected to take part in the significant encounter against Arsenal. Arsenal's sporting director, Andrea Berta, is well-acquainted with Alvarez, having been instrumental in his transfer from Manchester City.
The Gunners added Viktor Gyokeres to their forward lineup prior to the current season, but a series of injuries, including to Kai Havertz, have caused adjustments to their attacking strategy. Arsenal is reportedly preparing to be active in the summer transfer window, seeking to strengthen their squad with additions in key positions, including a forward, a central midfielder, and a full-back.
While Atletico is keen to retain Alvarez, the club has set an estimated valuation of £130 million for him. Reports from players close to Alvarez suggest that, if a move were to happen, he would lean towards joining Barcelona. Yet, speculation regarding his departure from Atletico remains uncertain, particularly given the challenges of orchestrating such a transfer this summer.
Simeone expressed optimism about Atletico's chances in the Champions League, highlighting the significance of reaching the semi-finals for the fourth time in 14 years. "It’s extraordinary that Atletico Madrid is in a Champions League semi-final again after nine years," he said.
Atletico captain Koke also shared his enthusiasm ahead of the fixture, likening the anticipation to the excitement felt before a first date. He acknowledged the confidence his team draws from their supporters and the importance of the challenge at hand.
As Atletico prepares to face Arsenal, both the team and its star player are focused on their immediate goals, aiming not only for Champions League success but also navigating the ongoing transfer narrative surrounding Julian Alvarez. The increasing reports of interest from Barcelona and the subsequent denials from Alvarez highlight the complexities of football deals and player commitments in the modern game.
