Apple Introduces Monthly Payment Option for Annual Subscriptions
Apple has unveiled a new payment model for app subscriptions available on the App Store, allowing users to pay in monthly instalments instead of a one-time annual fee. This move aims to alleviate the financial burden usually associated with upfront subscription payments for Apple device users.
The new plan enables users to break down their annual subscription costs into 12 equal monthly payments. For instance, if the yearly cost is ₹1,200, individuals will now pay ₹100 monthly. Nevertheless, there is a stipulation; these monthly payments come with a lock-in period of one year, which means subscribers are obligated to continue their payments for the full 12 months.
Should a user choose to cancel the subscription before the commitment term concludes, they will still be responsible for the remaining payments. The subscription will remain active until the year-long commitment expires, preventing automatic renewal after the subscription period concludes. Additionally, if subscribers fail to make any monthly payment, they will lose access to the service.
Apple's initiative to adopt this payment model is designed to provide greater flexibility for users managing their expenditures on various app subscriptions. However, it is crucial for users to understand the implications of the lock-in period associated with the monthly plan.
Furthermore, Apple is enhancing transparency and management of subscriptions by updating App Store pages. Users will soon see the amount due for their monthly payments alongside the due date, making it easier to track payments.
The new feature started being rolled out to users globally, excluding those in the United States and Singapore, as part of the upcoming releases of iOS 26.5, iPadOS 26.5, macOS Tahoe 26.5, tvOS 26.5, and visionOS 26.5, which is scheduled for May this year. This update follows Apple’s trend of prioritising user experience in managing app payments, aiming to clarify the subscription process.
Apple's strategy in innovating payment models appears to be a response to the evolving needs and preferences of its user base regarding financial flexibility. It remains to be seen how this shift will impact overall user satisfaction and subscription uptake in the long run.
