Joe Root scores his first Test century in Australia, boosting England's hopes in the Ashes series during a tense match in Brisbane.

Joe Root has secured his inaugural Test century in Australia, marking a significant milestone as England ended the first day of the second Test in a commanding position. After a lengthy wait of 12 years and 30 attempts, Root's achievement has revived England's aspirations in the ongoing Ashes series. Furthermore, it has spared former Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden the embarrassment of appearing in only a cowboy hat at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The day commenced at the Gabba in Brisbane with Hayden being celebrated by the local crowd. However, it concluded with Root firmly in the spotlight, stepping up when his team needed him most. The Gabba, known for its challenging conditions, had previously been a venue where England's Ashes hopes had often faltered. With England at 5-2 and then 211-6, the spectre of another early defeat loomed large.

Root, however, provided a calm presence amidst the chaos, delivering an innings that will be remembered regardless of the final outcome. The match fluctuated between despair and hope, particularly given the threat posed by Mitchell Starc, Australia’s pace bowler who has historically troubled English batsmen.

The crowd's anticipation for Root to finally achieve a century in Australia was palpable. When he reached his hundred—a leg glance off Scott Boland—celebrations erupted, with fans expressing their joy. Root, however, remained composed, shrugging off the significance of the milestone. He later stated, "Australia will have to admit he's a great," referring to the respect that comes with scoring runs against a formidable opponent.

While Root recognised that personal milestones are secondary to England's success in the series, his contribution of 135 runs has given the team a chance to secure their first victory in Brisbane since 1986 and their first win in Australia since 2011. Root has participated in 16 Tests without a win since his debut tour in 2013-14, an experience that has been both challenging and formative.

Previously, Root faced considerable scrutiny for his lack of centuries in Australia, with some critics questioning his place among the all-time greats. Darren Lehmann, Root's former coach at Yorkshire, had publicly suggested that Root could not be considered an all-time great until he had scored in Australia. Earlier this year, an Australian newspaper referred to him as "Average Joe" due to his scoring drought.

In the Brisbane Test, Root was quick to adapt to the conditions, showing remarkable restraint and focus. He scored his first 61 runs off just 94 deliveries but took 88 balls to accumulate the next 39. This strategic shift highlighted his maturity as a player, particularly as he navigated the tricky twilight phase of play.

Root's innings was complemented by Jofra Archer, who scored 32 not out, showcasing his batting prowess. The pair's partnership provided crucial support, with Archer's aggressive play inspiring Root to showcase his own flair, including a reverse-scoop for six.

While Root was the star of the day, the supporting cast included Harry Brook, who faced criticism for his reckless batting style. Brook, viewed as a future captain, struggled to capitalise on his potential and faced mounting pressure to perform in this pivotal series.

Mitchell Starc, who has already claimed 16 wickets in the series, continues to be a formidable opponent for England. The absence of off-spinner Nathan Lyon from the Australian squad raised eyebrows, especially as Lyon was seen discussing his frustration about being left out on live television.

With the next Test match looming, Root's performance may have set the tone for the remainder of the series. As he finally breaks the long-standing drought of centuries in Australia, the cricketing world will watch closely to see if England can build on this momentum. For now, it seems that the pressure is off, and Hayden can keep his clothes on.
