Israeli PM Netanyahu Visits UAE Amid Domestic Political Strain

The United Arab Emirates has confirmed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan during a visit to Abu Dhabi over the weekend. This confirmation was made on Monday, a day after the clandestine trip to the UAE capital. The visit occurs ahead of the upcoming Knesset elections in October, where Netanyahu faces significant domestic challenges.

The meeting included discussions about strengthening bilateral relations between the UAE and Israel, according to a report from the official Emirates News Agency, WAM. The two leaders reportedly focused on various topics, including strategic ties and regional stability. This visit comes as reports suggest that Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, commonly referred to as MBZ, had informed Netanyahu of an imminent threat from Hamas shortly before the group launched an attack on southern Israel.

On October 7, 2023, Palestinian fighters executed an assault that resulted in the deaths of at least 1,195 individuals in southern Israel, with around 250 individuals taken captive. Following this attack, Israel has responded with significant military action in Gaza, which has led to catastrophic casualties, with claims that over 73,669 Palestinians have been killed as a result of the ongoing conflict.

Media reports have indicated that about ten days before the violence, President Bin Zayed had warned Netanyahu during a phone call regarding a potential threat unveiled by Yahya Sinwar, then the leader of Hamas. Furthermore, earlier assertions from Israeli media stated that Bin Zayed had communicated critical intelligence to Israel’s Shin Bet security agency concerning the impending attack.

In response to these claims, Netanyahu's office has categorically denied that he received any alerts about the planned Hamas actions. He labelled a report from the Israeli newspaper Haaretz as “fabricated” and politically charged, announcing intentions to pursue legal action against the publication.

Ties between Israel and the UAE have strengthened since the Dubai-based state normalized relations with Israel through the US-brokered Abraham Accords in 2020. The UAE has also reportedly sought assurances regarding its defence posture against threats, with the United States Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, stating that Israel has stationed Iron Dome air defence systems in the UAE to counter potential Iranian hostilities.

Concerns surrounding the leaks associated with Netanyahu's visit led Shin Bet to express its discontent, filing a complaint with Israel’s military censor for potentially endangering the prime minister and revealing operational methods of the security agency.

As Netanyahu approaches the elections, he trails in popularity polls amid competition from former military chief Gadi Eisenkot, highlighting the political challenges he faces domestically while managing foreign relations with critical allies such as the UAE.
