Israeli Airstrikes in Lebanon Result in Rising Casualties
Israeli military actions in Lebanon have led to significant casualties amid ongoing conflict, with at least 19 reported dead in recent attacks.

Beirut has seen escalating violence in the form of Israeli airstrikes, which have resulted in an increasing death toll among civilians. On Saturday, May 9, 2026, Israeli drone strikes targeted vehicles just south of the Lebanese capital, claiming the lives of four individuals. Concurrently, separate Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanon have killed at least 13 people, including a father and his 12-year-old daughter, according to reports from the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health.

This series of strikes constitutes a further escalation following a ceasefire that had been established between Israel and the militant group Hezbollah on April 17. Despite the agreement, both parties have reportedly engaged in an ongoing exchange of attacks. Just days prior, Israeli forces carried out an aerial assault in a southern suburb of Beirut, which resulted in the death of a senior Hezbollah military officer, marking the first substantial violence near the capital after the ceasefire was introduced.

Details of the recent attacks reveal that two drone strikes occurred on a crucial highway linking Beirut to the port city of Sidon, injuring multiple civilians. A third drone attack, which took place in the Chouf region, resulted in three fatalities. The Health Ministry's reports indicate that an airstrike in the village of Saksakiyeh claimed at least seven lives, including that of a child, while also injuring 15 others.

In an especially tragic sequence, three drone strikes in Nabatiyeh killed a Syrian man and critically injured his daughter, who later succumbed to her injuries in a hospital. The Ministry of Public Health condemned these acts, labelling them as deliberate assaults on civilians and a violation of international humanitarian law.

The Israeli military reported that Hezbollah had launched explosive drones towards Israeli territory, injuring several soldiers in the process. Hezbollah has maintained its military pressure, claiming a series of ongoing military actions against Israeli positions along the border. The latest conflict resurgence can be traced back to March 2, when Hezbollah initiated a series of rocket attacks into northern Israel, soon followed by a ground invasion initiated by Israeli forces.

Despite a US-brokered ceasefire intended to stem violence, the situation on the ground remains dire. Reports indicate that the death toll from the ongoing conflict has exceeded 2,750, with nearly 500 people reportedly killed since the initiation of Israeli military actions on March 2. The United States is set to host new negotiations between Israel and Lebanon on May 14 and 15, aiming to establish a comprehensive peace agreement, although Lebanese authorities have insisted on an immediate cessation of strikes before engaging in dialogue.

During discussions in Damascus, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam emphasised Lebanon's commitment to not allowing its territory to be used against its Arab neighbours, particularly suggesting a desire to strengthen ties with Syria in the wake of regional instability. Salam also highlighted the need for security cooperation amid ongoing conflicts in the region, particularly following the end of the Assad regime's prolonged rule in Syria.

As the situation in Lebanon continues to deteriorate, international observers have raised concerns over the humanitarian implications of the ongoing conflict and the pressing need for a stable resolution to prevent further violence and casualties.
